Another technique I have used on full size paddle and oar blades is to inkjet print (with pigment ink, not dye) the design on rice paper (taped to letter stock so it feeds in the printer). Cut around the design closely, and use clear epoxy or glass resin to apply it to the blade. The resin soaks through the rice paper and it goes transparent, just like glass cloth. When dry, the resin protects the image, which look like it was printed on or a decal. Nice thing is you can do very large images that way.
