    Re: 1/72nd Revell Gato Wolfpack

Thanks, Paul. Yeah, if you mean those big, ugly, round-cornered raised rectangular thingies, don't worry, they're history—when I get around to it. I can't help but wonder what they are, or what they're meant to be, since I've never seen these things on photos that I can remember. Do you s'pose they were somehow on the original plans of the first, class-namesake Gato (SS-212)? I'm thinking maybe they were some kind of postwar mod on some boat that the German Revell researchers/developers ran across on a photo somewhere. Who knows. (Anyone?)

If it helps, I did a look through Floating Drydock's plan book (Gato/Balao class Submarine of World War Two) and didn't see anything that looked like those odd things.

The little fairwater squares are on USS Cobia, used by Revell as the main Gato reference. Don't know what they were.

It is true, all boats had the prop guards at some point, even Wahoo. I just want to run my boat in war patrol conditions.
      Warm regards,

        Paul,

Are you referring to the square object above the fairwater 'door'? They look like something that has beeb blocked off or covered...hiding the original item.

          Jeff,
It is the series of 6 rectangle weld/raised bead thingies.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Just to demonstrate my memory's continuing deterioration , I've been on this boat and I took this picture...so no doubt I've seen these things up close and personal but have no recollection of this fact. Look VERY closely at Cobia's fairwater between the tourists]http://i1143.photobucket.com/albums/n637/jefftytoo/SailwithTourists-1.jpg[/img]

Thank you, I thought I was a complete nut case for thinking I saw them.
Here is another photo showing the rectangles

What I cannot verify is when those were added.

Just a guess on my part.

I have not researched WWII boats, just reading in passing of various articles.
What I see is a structure that is made up of old technology and new technology.

The aft part is riveted together and the forward part is welded.
The rectangles are most likely shipyard access holes to work and fit equipment in the sail.
Once done, these large panels are placed and welded.

Are these panels on both sides of the sail?

Ahhh, those 'objects'! I was thinking of something attached to the fairwater...not a bunch of weld lines.

I agree with Ralph, their location and size look like access holes cut into the fairwater during refit/upgrades. Quite a number of period photos show those same weld lines.

                              Hi Guys!

There is some unreported progress on Gurnard done in the last weeks.

The turtleback got it's holes drilled.

The output stage of the gears was installed and the endcap glued to the cylinder.

The stern section got it's shaft protrusions and the plastic parts some brass tubes as bearings.

Unneeded areas where milled of the stern parts, For the stern shutters I used the molded step as demarcation line between fixed insert and shutter.

I'll mill the shutter internal areas also, for more rudder linkage clearance.

And last but not least, I started with the planking. The centerline one is the trickiest, glued after a good alignment with steel rulers an cured over night. The other will be aligned to it. Just some planks per day, while curing other parts.

                              So far from Germany.
                              Marco
