My mistake, it got the mod 4 sail in april 44 with a 4" gun in front position and 2 20mm on the sail.
Didn't found anything about the weapon loadout at the launch but possibly the same as after the modification.
But the deck of the kit is molded with modern gratings like they appear now on Cobia not with the war time plating which had 1" holes with a 6" spacing center to center.
Thanks Marco. Where are you finding nuggets of information like the dates and types of mods? What are you guys doing to correct the deck to reflect the proper war time configuration?
Mostly via navsource, as large wartime modifications where photographed with hull number and date on the trial runs. Modifications are circled.
As you see in my pics, my deck gets a complete replanking. For the metal decks is also scratch work needed as there are no arftermarket parts available (to my knowledge).
I have been away from my boat all summer ( attending two sub events mostly) and am looking forward to getting back to work on her.
Spending some time with Paul and John in Houston and the SunNFun got me really excited to work again. That's the great thing about going
to the events, it recharges your batteries!
Steve, I remember Wayne's build back in the day. I'm glad the boat wound up in your hands. She looks great!
Matt, welcome aboard. Flier should be a straightforward project without a lot of Portsmouth plans hassles. Can't beat that! The April 1944 shots on Navsource provide good coverage of all the important details such as guns, etc. Looks like all you'd have to do is cut down the fairwater a bit. Pretty much what I had planned with my original Flasher build.
My latest news is a 433mhz 9-channel radio setup I just got for running Wahoo. I'm looking forward to testing it out. Thanks Tim and Fitz for blazing the trail.
On the subject of targets, there's a 1/72 IJN Harusame in the back of my mind...
Thanks, Paul. I appreciate it. I take it that most if you are not fussing with the deck grating arrangement much? Marco pointed out that the deck, as supplied in the kit, is not quite right for the war patrols so I am curious as to how far most of you are taking this.
Paul,
I saw that as I read through the entire thread. I was hoping that your boat, WAHOO, is the exception and not the rule. So far I have not found anything on the deck of FLIER. It has to be out there. Like you with WAHOO, I collected information on the Russian Pike for 20 yrs. I have about everything you could imagine for that boat, but finding specifics about FLIER is turning out to be much more problematic than I imagined.
No, the kit's metal deck sections are decidedly postwar. However, it all depends on what you can live with. You might be able to find an EB museum boat with a wartime metal deck pattern you could copy. Or search for images of boats in her production series. I compare and contrast Silversides, Trigger and Whale when I have gaps in Wahoo evidence.
Thanks for the tip. FLIER's sister boats are Dace (SS-247), Dorado (SS-248), Flasher (SS-249), Flounder (SS-251) & Gabilan (SS-252). I'll get to work and see what I can dig up.
Not sure if they're still available, but Eduard offers (offered?) a PE deck set of the Revell Gato kit. If I recall correctly, it's for the later war deck variation that was mostly metal.
