Oh Oh ....... thought of another experiment.

Take a jar with a screw lid.
push it down in the water as you did the glass but now screw the lip on the jaw while down in the water.
Take it out and dry it off.
Hold close to ear and open lid.
You will hear the pressure built up in the jar being released.

I thought that the ballast tanks of US nukes were completely flooded when submerged....which would mean no pressure...?

Your example only works as representing the prototype if the ballast tanks are allowed to retain some air while submerged.

So...are the top ballast vents open when submerged?

Re: Los ANGELES class Submarine Built Thread

Then we are on the same page.

        USA nuke boats
Submerged the ballast tanks are indeed completely flooded.
The vents are closed when running submerged in case emergency blow is required.
The vents are cycled periodically to make sure air build up is released.
Air in the water will separate and can build up in the ballast tanks.

Internal hard tanks are used to fine turn neutral bouncy.
        Not the main ballast tanks.

Surfaced is when the ballast tanks have pressure built up to keep the water from coming in the open bottom flood holes.

What I think is we both know how these boats really work, we just have different terms in expressing our thoughts.

My military background is nuke trained submarines but always assigned forward non nuke. (there's a reason but it's hard to explain).
Due to the schools I was sent to, I did not get assigned to a boat going on patrol.
I spent my time in the yards working on boats during refits and overhauls.
I got the chance to climb up inside the USS George Washington SSBN 598 forward ballast tank #2 for a look around while on the block in Charleston, SC.
I got to see the control room of NR-1 three weeks after being put in the water.
It was only 15 minutes and I and a buddy didn't know what the boat was. We were told that NR-1 was for Navy Recuse 1.
While assigned to the GW the Benjamin Franklin 640 came in with electrical issues.
GW was across the dock and it was 3am. I was part of a group that was asked to go over and see if we could help trace down the electrical problem.
4 hours later the Ben was on it's way again.
I am one of those who had all my signatures to qualified submarines but never received my dolphins because I did not have the required patrol.

        The rest of the story.
When I discharge in Charleston, my captain called me in to his office. I didn't know why. Was thinking he was going to delay my discharge.
We talked and he said I didn't qualify on paper but he wanted me to have these. He handed me a small box which contained a set of dolphins and a missile boat patrol pin.

I have never worn them as I did not earn them. But I do have them in a small wooden picture frame in my office desk draw.

Sorry, Marius, this is your build thread.

LW LaRue, we can discuss anything nuke submarine, I know some things but I am still amaze at what I learn from others. These boats are very big complicated machine. I enjoy it when someone makes me do research. I am also amazed at how much can be found that was considered top secret when I was in, if you know what your are seeing.

Thanks to everyone who has made me go looking for better answers!

Is all right ,RALF .I don't mind because is about subs . Very interesting discussion specially for me .
A Little complex and complicated explanation for my knowledge I must admit , , but because I want to get as much knowledge as I can , I am always eyes and years on everything I am interested . .

Now , the answer to my question is somewhere and I miss them , or steel on his way !?!? .

Here's a web site that show how both USA and Russian boats ballast systems work.
This site was last updated 2001. It has always been a good source for information.

Here is a little trick to use when searching for information.

I use Google. Type in what you are looking for. Then when the hundreds of web sites are listed, don't try looking through them. Just go to the action buttons below the google search window. Click on Images.

I find it much easier to look through images to find what I'm looking for. Then you can click on the image and choose to see image (which is usually a clearer image) or go to web site.

Here's the google search I did for "submarine ballast systems".

                      HI all ,

A Little Progress to day and I'd like to go on but:
                      QUOTE :
"The areas you drew in red are not flood holes. The one to port is the SPM cover and should be a scribed outline. The one to starboard is the anchor and should also be a scribed outline." by PAUL
Can You detail a Little bit with simple words how should be those PLEASE ?

I made the big holes and I'd like to know how to do the rest of it .

anyone have an idea how they look like those in order to make the scribing ?.

                        Hello all ,

After couple months of absence I began working again on LA project . I start working on wtc components and in order to finalize the propeller shaft I need some help and guidance to do these :
                        - how to find the center of the AFT cone ?;
                        - how to fix the Bronze Bushing on that cone with the possibility of extraction if is needed ?.
                        - how do I know what is the correct position before make the hole for bushing ?;
To understand much better what I mean see the pictures:

I made sam small progress with , what I say is "balast tank pump command Block" . I had some changes becouse when I glued those 2 microswitchs to the "komacel" piece , a tiny drop of glue was poured to the pastic axe of the metalic arm and melt it :

                              Marius,
Good to see that you are working at it again. Are you also going to cast the LED in as well?
Why not just drill a hole so that if something needs repairing, you would be able to? I am not saying that is the right way, just typing out loud for discussion.
                              Peace,
                              Tom
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

No I'm not going to cast another mast for the LED . Your assumption is correct about making a hole for the LED , and then glue the LED on it .
Is a great filing when You see there is someone wiling to discus different ideas .
