    Change in plans!! Or a

Change in plans!! Or a new possible idea!!
Could be the Antibiotics messing with my mind, but I just had an epiphany!!
I was thinking (Usually dangerous) about what would be the best way to make the tug lighter for transportation and almost unsinkable!! (Remember the Titanic)
Outfit the tug hull like it was a sub! In other words put a cylinder inside and make it free flood to waterline.
No extra weight would be needed for ballast and if it got swamped WHO CARES!!!
It’s already got water inside!! DUHHH!!!!
Now to see if I can make it work.
I think I may have the parts left over from my first version of my Seaview when I had the Kings Ransom motor.
Now if I could only get to the shop to work on this. Bummer!!

      I have had some input

I have had some input that this idea may make the boat unstable and I can see this.
The trick will be to keep the weight as low in the hull as I can.
I think I am going to give it a try anyway.
The worst that could happen is I will plug the intakes and add weight.
The R/C system will still be sealed and free from the dreaded H2O invasion. BD.

I snuck down to the workshop for about an hour and a half today and got a little work in before I pooped out.
I was able to get most of the foam out of the bottom and mark the cut line to trim around the top. I also took a photo of the Kort nozzle and the prop I will be using. It looks like the cylinder will fit in the low step section. It will be about 2.25" x 6".
Lots of room left for batteries. BD.

          Name change.
I was reminded last night that Hartman made a tug called the Little Toot so I think I will call mine the Big Toot!
Even though it is not very big it will still Toot!! Ha!! BD.

            I got the rest of

I got the rest of the foam out. I decided to take it all out and then work from there. I also trimmed the upper hull to shape. I am adding some more glass to thin spots inside the hull, and to brace up mounting points.
I still have to sand and prime the hull smooth.
Looks like I will be able to use my large template to cut out the deck.
I will use sheet fiberglass for the deck. BD.

              While waiting for the glass

While waiting for the glass to cure I started a stuffing box.
It is just some K&S tube and Rulon bearings on each end.
The prop shaft is 4MM so I had to drill out the bearings on a lathe to 4MM.
Here is a photo of the drive system if I use the Venom motor.
The Force is strong with this motor and I am not sure I can resist!! Ha!! BD.

                I spent a few hours

I spent a few hours today doing my second least favorite thing.
                Sanding!! Painting is the first.
Still have more to do but I was sick of fiberglass dust.
I also fitted my drive train. I have decided to go with the Venom motor and dry hull. I have found it will take 80 OZ to get the hull down to water line. BD.

                    Doing one of my favorite

Doing one of my favorite things today. Throwing chips!!
I made two nozzle bushings and a rudder post thingy with and O-ring seal on the lathe.
I stuck a shaft through so you can see how it will fit together.
I am taking my time and measuring twice so my prop will line up correctly inside of the nozzle. BD.

                      I finished mounting the Kort

I finished mounting the Kort nozzle. I think it is going to work very well.
With the amount of swing I can get I should be able to almost spin her around like a top.
I have made all the hardware beefy because of the power output of the Venom motor.
I have one in my Rock Crawler and they have lots of torque.
She should have the power of a tug three times her size. BD.

                        I did a test today

I did a test today on lunch break to see how the drive worked.
                        I could not resist.
I did not have the Kort nozzle on it was just the prop but she really has some push!! BD.

                          Didn't the original

                          Hey Dave,
Didn't the original Kort nozzles turn the prop and the nozzle together? Those could go 360 degrees if I remember right? They were driven from the top through some sort of bevel gear arrangement.

                            No.
                            Actually they are called Z-drives.
The Korts do not turn the prop as well.
This system gives you almost the direction control as a Z-drive without the complexity. BD.

I've never thought it would be that practical, but it would be neat to basically make an R/C Glomar Explorer (sp?).
