Re: 2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!

Those posting above have covered most of the news. A day high in fun quotient and camaraderie but low on boat performance—at least for some of us. As always, Oudmayer's and Dory's boats ran flawlessly, though a couple of pronounced radio "dead spots" out in the water were noted and reported. The rest of us all had various issues of assorted hindrance. As for myself, I got one decent run out of Seaview early in the morning before her rudders locked up (somehow binding or the result of a failed servo]Blueback[/i] couldn't run at all because I couldn't get any gas into her blow tank]Nautilus[/i] consult), and of course more still and further details in the next SCR's Fox Report.

    TIll then,
    JeffP

Re: 2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!

      Update:
I have had my boat open and checked all the servos, motor and plug connections.
Put it all back together and did range testing to 150'.
Run the boat for 30 minutes on the bench.
      Did not shut down once.

Of course this in not in the water and not in this lake.
I have no solutions for what happened yesterday.
      ----------------------
While looking at the photos of the boats, something came to my attention.
The boats that run at the lake regularly and have no issues when running all have their Rx antenna sticking out of the top of the sail as as a mast.
When running they spend a lot of time at periscope depth and this antenna has at least 1/2" out of the water.
Now I am not saying this is why these boats run so well, I did not see the boats running with the antenna below the water surface.
Just wasn't something I was thinking about at the time.

Will be looking for more photos and Steve's video to see if I can find these boats running completely submerged.
      Antenna completely under.

This is just a thought I need to look in to.
My antenna is completely inside the cylinders.
I remember talking with Darrin and his seeing antenna is completely inside the cylinder.

One more thing to check in to.

Glad to see you guys having fun...

          a couple questions....

          1) two gentlemen i don't recognize... the man in straw/cowboy hat and shorts... and the gentleman carrying Steve's Nautilus in the blue shirt... do you have names for those two?
          2) are you guys planning on doing this more often than once a year? or will i have to wait until next year's fun run?

          Tim

Guys, Thanks again for another great event. Nacken ran great as long as I stayed away from the Yorba Linda triangle. I would lose signal for a split second which would blow the piston tank. Staying along the shore was fine and my trim was just about perfect. It was good to see everyone again.
            What to build next?????

              Tim,

The Straw Hat Man is a longtime SC member, a buddy of mine named Neil Schmidt. He's an engineer for Honda. He's got a 32nd Parallel Ohio class (impressive when running!) and some other ongoing r/c sub projects, including an Alvin like yours. Currently he's working on that little Delta you see in the photo where he's consulting with Will, who's got and runs the larger version. Both those two are key figures in our group 66" Nautilus build (same kit as Steve Neill's, only older). The other gentlemen is Alan Haskell, a static boat modeler—one of Steve's posse, like the rest of us—who's also into r/c subs.

Thanks for asking! Schmidt threatens to join us in SanFran one of these years, so maybe you'll meet him then...

              Later,
              JeffP

Darrin, it was great to see you and your Big Boat there as always. Thanks again for joining us! Love your new name for the pond's interference area: The Yorba Linda Triangle. Somehow, I think that name's gonna stick!

                Best,

Oh, yeah, Tim: I HOPE we'll do this more often than once a year. But even if we don't as a group, Will Oudmayer and Mike Dory run there on their own fairly frequently. If you're ever gonna be in town, check with them first and I'm sure a run could be arranged. And that would certainly be an occasion to bring out more of us as well!
