2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!

    Guys,

Starting this new thread simply as a reminder; hope everyone will see it.

Our beloved local L.A. SubRon is still very much ON for our first seasonal group outing, this SATURDAY, APRIL 25th at the model boating pond (third one, farthest to the right, if I recall) of the YORBA REGIONAL PARK (7600 E. La Palma—714-973-6615 or 714-973-6838; yorbapark@ocparks.com) in Anaheim. It'll cost you at least $5 to get in the gate, since that was the price last year.

I imagine Oudmayer, always the early bird, will be first on hand (per tradition)—probably by 0800 or so. Everyone else will roll in at different times over the next hour or so and if we follow last year's pattern, the party will break up around mid-afternoon. Parking is handily close to the pond site, so fear not about bringing big boats.

At last word, and in no particular order, below are the skippers who are planning to attend:

    Will Oudmayer
    Mike Dory
    Darrin Hataway
    Steve Neill and Mary C.
    Ralph Fendley
    Neil Schmidt
Tom Chalfant (of SubRon7 in Vegas)
    Jeff Porteous

Don't recall if we've heard yet from Alan Haskell, but he attended this event last year. Alan, if you see this, sound off! (Ralph or Steve, wanna give him a call?)

Any others who see this and plan to be in the area are of course more than welcome to join us. Feel free to post here with any questions or concerns.

Hope everybody's boats are ready to patrol. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

    Good Luck and Good Hunting,
    JeffP

My George Washington will not be coming.
Looked it over a couple of weeks ago to change out the Rx to a newer one that talks to my Tx.
Found the rubber ballast bladder has set so long that it has several cracks in it.
    It is unusable.

I am working on my Skipjack.
Very close to being ready for sea trials.
Got the electronics sorted out this morning after several set backs.
Now, I am moving on to the ballast system.
I have all the parts and will be doing assembly.
Tonight or tomorrow I will be water testing the cylinder.
If that passes then on to trimming the boat.

But if the boat is not ready..doesn't pass trimming, I will still be bringing along.

    Sorry, Jeff, can't help.
    I don't know Alan Haskell.

Sorry, Ralph, thought you two were buds. Steve knows him well though, so there's still that possible connection.

      You out there, Alan?

Thanks, BD, and I'm on it, Boss! At least some shots for the June issue FOX column. Hope to post some too, like you East Coasters always do...

Did hear from Alan Haskell, and he's planning to come too, so we have a full crew complement. (And I'm now charging batteries even as I type this!)

All Axis shipping, Cold War evil-doers and Giant Seaweed Men are hereby served notice: you nefarious types are all in our 'scope crosshairs!

            See everyone Saturday,

Oh, yeah: Steve tells me Mary is bringing the video camera so they can put some footage of the event up on Steve's site. You guys had BETTER be ready for your closeups!

I can hear your harmonica from here, Scott!

Some disappointing news to report: Just heard from the Squadron Commander of SubRon7: Commodore Chalfant will be unable to join us tomorrow after all (Sick Bay duty), but plans to see us at the Fall Fun Run in San Francisco as he did last year. His absence will be keenly felt—especially by anyone running a temperamental Type XXIII.

I just checked and it's only 2236 mi for me.
If I had Supercar up and running it would be a snap.
I heard they give train rides at the park.

Dave, I would be more than happy to let you take over the California bullet train.
We don't need it. We could use the money to pipe in water.

                      Speaking of water.
My Skipjack cylinder was in the test tank this morning.
Only issue was the pinion gear on the ballast pump slipped after about 4 minutes.
I know the fix but time is not my friend, so it will go with a quick fix repair. (glue the pinion on the shaft)
I need to change the tubing in the pump.
Tim recommend the change almost a year ago and I forgot.
Now it becomes next week's project.
I still have to add weight/foam and trim the boat.
                      Close will count.
I and the boat will be there tomorrow.

Dave, for me, its ONLY 1000 miles (almost exactly 1000 miles... how cool is that) a 14 hour road trip..... hmmmm..... I could be there by 7am.... where is my case of Jolt Cola....

                              Guys,
I will not be there. I am scheduled for surgery in one week to remove some cancer (Chordoma) on my tailbone. We as a family thought it was wise for me not to ride 10 hours round trip in one day (it does ache to sit for long times). To say I am bummed is an understatement. I can shoot for the SF fun run if my recovery goes well.
                              Peace,
                              Tom
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.
