Re: 2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!
We are just waking up here on the west coast.
Report coming.
Going through photos now to get a boat count.
All boats returned to port safely.
No boats lost.
However, there seems to be a problem.
My second time in the water Skipjack, first being tank test on Friday, had issues with radio control being intermittent.
I would have control for about 10 to 15 seconds then every thing on the boat would shut down.
I would work the Tx controls and then the boat would come to life again.
For 10 to 15 seconds.
Keep close to shore in case I need to go in after the boat.
I ran the boat about 20 minutes before deciding to pull the boat out.
Was thinking it better to do that and work on the boat at home to try and find the problem.
Then another boat started having similar issues.
The forward dive planes would move to full dive after a few seconds and then release to normal.
Then again move to full dive.
I was watching with interest.
A little later Steve showed up with his fleet.
Knowing Steve's boats where well tested, I found it interesting that Steve began having control issues with his first boat in.
Then the second.
The interesting part was watching Steve's boat with and seeing the the problems would not happen on the bench or when the boat was only half way in the water.
But as soon as the boat was totally in the water, the WTC surrounded by water, the issues would come back.
Got me to thinking maybe it wasn't my boat after all and that I needed to visit another pond before tearing in to my boat's electronics.
Someone brought up that there may be a big electrical cable running under the lake very near to the the point we were running.
None of the surface boats show evidence of these issues.
The boats that run there regularly didn't show these problems.
Then Darrin's large Nacken showed minor issues that he hadn't had over the past year.
-----------------------------------------
A mystery at the lake has shown it's self.
And there's more.
At last years gathering, I had my George Washington there.
I was in the water only 10 minutes trying to get control of my boat.
I kept loosing rudder control.
Again and again.
I decided to stay out of the water then as well.
I did not test the boat this past year thinking my old Futaba Attack Four Tx and Rx where not up to the task.
It has been sitting waiting for me to change out the Rx.
Didn't get to it.
So maybe after yesterday, the problems are not in the boats.
Or at least most of the problems aren't in the boats.
-------------
Currently I am going through the photos I took.
Will up load a web page with the photos and link to it some time today.
Jeff ended up taking lots of photos after he had a problem with his high pressure ballast system.
It seems the cans of liquid air have changed the valve attachment fitting and his three screw on control valves would not engage the internal release valve on the canned air.
The needle valve seems to be too short so Jeff was not able to charge his boat's ballast system.
Re: 2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!
A quick note:
I just loaded the photos taken yesterday and found something odd.
Some photos I know I took are not there.
Am I sure?
Yes, a couple of the photos were of my boat in the water and on it's stand.
Also the money shot of Steve's large Nautilus, the full profile shot on the stand, is not there.
Looking at the directory, the photo numbers are not sequential.
There are gaps in the number order.
Okay, I just check and Rod Serling is not standing behind me........
Re: 2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!
We had a great time. Travel time there and back was interesting. About 2 hours to get there, three to get back. Traffic was awful but it was all worth it to see my friends and spend time with them playing with our favorite past times. I had my fair share of problems but what would be a model submarine without the occasional problem, especially with two new boats in my case.
The Nautilus had never been in the lake and performed well. Trim was perfect but I couldn’t dive deeper than my frog eyes. She did in the test pool but that was different water than the lake and she was more buoyant in the lake. Two pieces of lead fore and aft would have done the trick.
I ran her “as is†for awhile; after all I had a 5000 mah pack in a boat with less than a 5 amp draw. But after we got her out on the bench Mike Dory found that the forward compartment had a small leak.
Ralph describes well what was happening to the R class. Once I got the bugs worked out she was running well but every time I dived she would come back up on the OTW's cylinder's fail safe much like Darren's boat. She was a bit tail heavy two. I corrected that and was getting ready for a bit more when the 1300 mah gel cell ran down. Not enough capacity as Bob's 12 volt cylinder draws more current and amps. I will be getting a 12 volt nimh pack next for it with a 5000 map cap.
Then I tried take out my converted King’s Ransom. That’s right I converted it to a full RC sailing ship with no motor and real sails and controls. It was quite winding there by this time and blowing the wrong way for a launch.
Then I took the footy out and got her pretty far out by some miracle and back again. It was a gale l and starting to rain.
Last I took out my Bristol Bay for a perfect run even in the high seas and wind that boat runs like a camp. 8 years old and going strong.
By the time we left it was raining a cold. We had just made it.
What a fun time and I thank Jeff Porteous for starting LA Subron. Thanks for putting this event together at such a great location. The lake was perfect for our boats. It was a great natural, clear, easy recovery, not too deep site. Except for the phantom radio glitch I have never been to such a great location.
Ralph it was great to see you after 3 years. Mike Dory. We finally meet! Daren we got to do this more often. Alan Haskell always a pleasure and it was great to meet your wonderful wife! Jeff! Always a pleasure to see you.
And finally, thanks you guys for helping me load and unload all that stuff I brought! I don’t get to the lake often so when I do I bring the kitchen sink!
On last note, I did bring a WW2 mosquito to fly. I planned to launch it out over the lake and land it behind us in the lawn gear up. But it was so windy it would have been a bit tricky. Next time
Re: 2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!
I saw the photos that Steve uploaded to the Dropbox (thanks, Steve!)....looks like everyone had a great time. We definitely need to get a bunch of these into the next SCR to help spread the word about SubRonLA.
Seeing Steve's Nautilus makes me wish I hadn't sold mine....looks convincingly 'mean'.
One can't help wonder what's in the water of that pond that may be causing signal reception problems.......
Re: 2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!
Thanks Jeff. If I had to keep only two of my boats it wold be the Nautilus and the VIIC.
Here is a short video. Not the best but the day was cold windy and rainy. By the time I got there around 11am I missed most of the action and then the camera batteries died.
Re: 2nd Annual SubRonLA Spring Fun Run this Saturday!
I have not had my Ray Mason Nautilus out of the case in 4 years.
Glad to see you could attend this time Steve.
I asked Jeff P to tell you I was still alive.
Moving slow, but still moving. BD.
