That gun was NEVER used on submarines! It was surface ships only. The ammo was interchangeable with the submarine gun, but the A/A rounds were not carried by the boats. The sub round was referred to as "Common". It was an HE round with a range of ~14,700 yds. Good penetration on lightly armored vessels.
The sub gun was : 5" Gun Mount MK 40, 25 Caliber Single Purpose, Submarine Mount. The complete tech manual is available in the HNSA site, Resources, Manuals, Submarine, and Torpedo Fire Control. I recently used it to ID a pair of MK 91 Gun Sight Binoculars a guy at work inherited from his father-in-law. Those binoculars were the preferred late-war sub gun sight optics.
If you do the above submarine gun in 1/48 and 1/72 scale, I know a guy that would buy two of each!!! ME! If I knew how to plug in a picture, I have a couple that would illustrate the difference very well.
Take care, keep up the good work!!!
