    Hi Jeff & Ronald,

    Thanks for the info.

Ronald, as far as lengthening the periscope base and the UZO (from the pic of the your latest tower), how did you accomplish this? Was it with discs of sheet styrene or did you use a form of putty?

Jeff, Maybe when I retire, will I tell a few stories, and yes I have a few during the cold war that are interesting.

    Cheers

    Brad

I think everyone has built a tank or two haven't we

Are limber holes the same as Flood Holes/Gates? I have heard that if you drill out the flood holes, you should be able to see through them, but you should just see through to the inner hull? Also, the limber holes on the bow are the only ones that you should be able to see through?

        Thanks again!

Brad-U-boat challenged, but I can tell you some neat stuff about the Akula & Typhoon

          well, we build these too,

well, we build these too, don't we ?...

basically, you don't see anything thru the limber holes,
but I feel "real dark" beats "painted black" any time.

I plan to put some hint of a pressure hull inside,
like a roll of black carton or something.

I am not yet clear on a diorama or not, so maybe
I will put some more detail around open
hatches. But first I want to finish the tower..

Brad- if you get your hands on one of the references listed, there will probably be a side view diagram that shows the actual pressure hull shape inside the outline of the boat. You will see that there is lots of outer casing that makes up what you know as a type VII U-Boat shape.
So yes, limber holes are same as flood vents (but grates may be openings for access to hatcheds underneath, but basically the same thing), and there are some places, especially up near the bow, where you would be able to look through both sides. However, as Ronald has stated, the pressure hull would be visible through some of the middle holes. I would find some way to open that long slot along the top of the saddle tanks by reinforcing internally; I think it would look funny if you opened all the flood grates and left that slot painted black.

            cheers,
            Sam

Thanks very much Sam for the info. I am working on getting the Anatomy of the Ship Type VII U-boat book. Being married, it takes a bit of convincing. I didn't mention this below, but I build mostly WWII aircraft, and to start building up references for U-Boats can be tricky.

              Thanks

                  wolf pack,
your periscope is a marvel !

                  brad,
                  While waiting for the book,
do not underestimate the Internet !

                  have a look at
The U-boat War in World War Two (1939-1945) and World War One (1914-1918). Over 30,000 pages on the officers, the boats, technology and the Allied efforts to counter the U-boat threat.

                  http://5533.rapidforum.com/ (free registration reqd.)

( vary the numbers, i.e. u995-003.jpg etc. or start with
the site name, click spots then other spots)
                  Some understanding/guessing of german required..

Of course, our site www.subcommittee.com has a decent
collection of links and photo's as well.

and of course use www.google.com and be creative in
the selection of words in your search.

                  happy browsing !

sadly, my ISP has a problem and therefore I cannot publish
the pictures of the tower insides (yet).
                  a bit more patience, please...

                    Hello,
As i said before im building ww2 aircrafts and thats why im very sensitive with the propellers.Im trying to give the same ephasis on my boat propellers as well.If you take a closer look on the revell props you will see that they are not very accurate "at least in my opinion".They are 22mm in diam. and i try to find somethink better in the market.I found a company named raboesh that have brass propellers for r/c boats. In their range they have 20 and 25 mm props that i think they will add to the revell kit.I have order the 20mm A type M3 (item number 146-01 146-02).

                    Raboesh page is]http://home.concepts-ict.nl/~raboesch/english/cat2_index.htm[/url]

I will post a photo of them when i receive them in the end of the month i hope.I have allready a raboesh prop 35mm for my flower class corvette in 1/72 and i can only tell you that they are 100% fine products. So if you are interest you can contact with them and order.

                    Ps
If you havent allready visit the www.airfan.de just go and check.

                    many regards

                    Thomas

The best book I have ever seen on U-boats is called The U-boat by Eberhard Rossler (in English).

I remember reading somewhere that the props on Type VII U-Boats were not brass or bronze and therefore not that color; they were actually cast of another material and a dull gray color. Can anyone confirm this? If you are going for strict realism, that shiny, beautiful prop would then have to be painted over with a dull gray color.
I honestly don't remember where I read this...hopefully, someone out there knows...
