Oh ya, I am watching. I have nothing to add unless you want a lot of "golly gee" and "Wow" or maybe an occasional drool. Just sitting back, bowl of popcorn, and watching the show.
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

While I'm waiting for the indexing lips to cure in place, I started tinkering with the SOAKS sensors on my 3D printer. First rough draft. The final print will be of much better quality

Yes, I am following this every day.
I never know when something will be posted I can use or try to use.

It looks like I need to go do some face to face with 3D printers to learn what they can do and what they need as input.
So, yes, your post are very helpful.

              Awesome work!

What 3D printer do you have? If you cut the file vertically and print in two sections, you can print the parts in a standing configuration and get a better print pattern. Of course you'll print in better resolution on your next pass, but having vertical striations might look better than horizontal (just my two cents).

                Hi Bob...

I had thought of that as well. I'm going to be trying different cuts later tonight.

I grabbed the MakerBot 2x Dual Extruder printer. It can do two colors unlike the other MakerBots.

I will post the results here.

Not much work to show today. Been a busy day. Just been working on cleaning up the planes and rudders in preparation for their installation.

                  Keep the suggestions coming!

The appendages are cleaned up and ready for installation. In order to get as perfect alignment as possible, I 3D printed three round discs of varying size. Each one had notches at the 90, 180, 270, and 360 marks. Since I already knew two axis because of the seam between the upper and lower hull sections, I just needed the other two, 180 and 360. Put the discs over the stern, line it up with the seams, and mark the other points. Do this three times with the three different discs and connect the dots. Bam. Straight perfectly aligned center lines for the appendages.

Update for today.... the WTC saddles are in, as well as the dive planes, rudders, and pod.

The molds for the prop have been long ago lost. As such, I purchased a seven blade prop of the appropriate diameter from Engel. The problem is the diameter of the base of the propeller is far smaller than the diameter of the end of the Akula's stern. I needed to add a taper to the stern to get the prop to look correct.

Using the 3D printer, I produced a tapered cone with a 3/16" hole through it for the prop shaft.

                            Erich,

Is that taper piece an example of using the Makerbot at the higher resolution? Looks great!

This piece was printed using standard resolution. The printer has three pre-programed settings: low (0.30mm/layer), standard (0.20mm/layer), and high (0.10mm/layer). You can do custom layer heights within that range as well.
