Re: Bronco Type XXIII build
Very cool! It is your boat, paint it any way you want. Look forward to the water footage - these are exciting times with kits like this.
Peace,
TomIf you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Merriman's having trouble with his Type 23 going into an uncontrolled dive during submerged running. Any problem with yours?

Re: Bronco Type XXIII build
Mine is not painted yet, and I'm still trimming it out for submerged operations but I've not had any issues with its behavior other than having to tweak the rudder throw to improve the turning radius. It behaves very similarly to my old 32nd Parallel Type XXIII.Regards,

Matt- what are you using for your ballast system?Mine is not painted yet, and I'm still trimming it out for submerged operations but I've not had any issues with its behavior other than having to tweak the rudder throw to improve the turning radius. It behaves very similarly to my old 32nd Parallel Type XXIII.

Re: Bronco Type XXIII build
You know Matt I noticed the same thing on my limited run time about turning radius.
I figured with the rudder behind the prop it would turn better but it did not seem to.
I just figured it was me and just lack of stick time.
I did end up with decent throw too using basically the same system the real one used.
Push pull rods.
But be that as it may the 23 is still one
looking sub.

Re: Bronco Type XXIII build
Very odd and interesting. The larger version (1/25th scale) has a tendency to slightly nose up when running submerged....Merriman's having trouble with his Type 23 going into an uncontrolled dive during submerged running. Any problem with yours?
I wonder if there is some small hull shape differences between the two. Also a comparison of where the c.g.'s and c.b.'s are may be useful.

Re: Bronco Type XXIII build
Sam,
I'm using a simple home brew centrifugal pump ballast system (flood down-pump out) in a 2.5" cylinder. I am using one of SubTech's old propel backup failsafe systems to keep me out of trouble. Very inexpensive to build and seems to work flawlessly...so far...
Dave,
I was surprised by the poor turning radius, but with some additional throw and a pick up in forward speed it is acceptable for now. I really don't want to have to resort to a non-scale rudder, but you are right, it is one slick looking sub! I like that red anti-fouling.....it really has me wanting to go that route.
Jeff,
Other than the turning radius I have not witnessed any bad behavior at all, but I am using an old Subtech APC-3 to keep her level. She runs at scope depth hands off at 1/4 throttle. The trim does change at higher speeds and it does take a bit more forward pressure on the stick to keep her down where she is supposed to be. I guess that might be that bow up tendency you mentioned?
Anyway, a very nice little kit that makes up a pretty little U-boat in a super handy size!
MattRegards,
Matt

Re: Bronco Type XXIII build
Matt,
...yup, sounds like your behaves like my OTW version. Pretty much hands off at scope depth and as the speed increases, a bit more down angle on the bow planes is called for.

Re: Bronco Type XXIII build
Guys,
Tony G's. OTW XXIII would drop like a rock, bow first, on diving for a good while before he got her dead nuts trimmed out. He still had to develop "the touch" after trimming to get her to behave. The drag from the sail is the cause of the tendency to go bow upward as you increase speed a bit. I'm told that the Marlin has a similar issue. The XXIII may have it more so as that sail is not a streamlined as Marlin's and presents much more "blunt" surface area to the water flow. If you compare the leading edges of the two sails, you can see how the XXIII could develop this drag.
Take care,
B^)

Re: Bronco Type XXIII build
You are so smucken fart Bill.
That has got to be it.
Who Knew!
And that is one big sail too.
One thing I like about the 23, the Skipjack, and the Walrus class.
Big sails are just too cool. BD.sigpic"Eat your pudding Mr Land"
