It helps a lot if you add thixotropic silica to your resin mix. It sands a LOT easier....It is also known as cab-o-sil....

more bondo work today. here is where it sits now.

i feel confident that it is now smooth. however..... i have a question for you guys. should i primer the hull, wetsand, primer, wetsand till its smooth and then mold it?

Yes, but try alternating two different colors of primer. Then sand down only to the previous color of primer to avoid too much sanding in that area. Keep the photos coming.

ok. back to this project! i was sidetracked last week, a friend of mine asked me to repair a broken stormtrooper helmet that he owns that was cast from the screen used helmets. long story short, i replaced the ears, fixed some cracks and repainted the whole helmet. hope he likes it.

                        updates soon!

so! i went to the hobby store today (mark twain hobby in st. charles mo) and picked up some more apoxie sculpt.

ive used this stuff before on a vader reveal helmet i built for a friend. it has a 3 hour work time, and untill that point, you can smooth it like clay and detail it. once it sets its rock hard and stronger than the fiberglass on the reveal helmet, and supposedly water proof. in the morning i plan on testing sculpting a dive plane out of it. time will tell!

well, im happy to report that after lots of tests, the apoxie sculpt seems like a good canidate for this project! it sculpts like clay, and after it cures is like fiberglass as far as hardness goes.

here is the rough shape of the lower rudder

here is where the rudder sits now. its been shaped, and i filled the low spots with more apoxie sculpt. waiting for that to cure now.

so thats where i sit now! the upper rudder is curing as we speak! updates tomorrow i hope!

more progress on the rudders! the upper is roughly shaped, the lower is almost done. primered the hull again, and disaster struck.... the primer reacted.... i know why. in my rush i forgot to prep the surface again. oh well, i can fix it.
