As a practical matter I drilled these two small holes in the hull to service the set screws on the u-joint coupler and the wheel collar that holds the thrust bearings.

You can see them here along with the final configuration of the linkages. Sorry for the sideways picture but I had to shoehorn the camera down into the open hull to get it.

    Driveshafts in place.

Then I drilled 10 1/8" dia. holes down the centerline of the upper hull to help vent the hull. I also chamfered them from underneath.

Because of the design of the wooden stand I can lay the submarine over on its side for various purposes.
You can see here the mismatch of the indexing seams at the rear when you even up the top of the hull halves. Later this will have to be filled.

So how did it go? Well I must admit that I had dillusions of grandier here. I expected to verify the trim and then take it to the submarine pond for a shake down cruise. Well I verified it alright, I verified that it was off.

You can see here that it floats waaaaayyyy too high in the front and too low in the stern. I should have remembered the Seaview. The mistake that I made on her was that I put the foam too low in the hull. I did the same with the Oscar.

You can see here all the foam is in the lower half. Thats over an inch below the waterline. Itll all have to come out and go even with the bottom of the upper hull. That will place the top of the foam even with the waterline which splits the two rows of torpedo tubes in the front and is 1/4" above the bottom of the movable portion of the rudder.

Other than that it took the large Caswell Snort pump 1 1/2 mins. to empty the ballast tank of water. My plan is to take a video of her running at periscope depth and engage the Snort and watch as she returns in a scalelike manner to surface trim. Also she has an all up weight at present of 14 lbs. I used my digital fish scale to record her thrust and it indicated 1 lb. 5 ounces of pull against me. The props are 53mm ,7 blade counter rotating units.

Here is a shot of the testing procedure of using a rubber band to hold a couple of pieces of foam against the hull to see where to install the foam on the inside once its proper location has been determined, thus the rubber bands.

It might be of interest that I work with a person who speaks and reads fluently in Russian. So I brought these plans for the Oscar that Scale Ships supplies with the hull , to get some of the terms translated. The crest that you see here below the torpedo tubes is translated "Atomic Submarine Missle Cruiser" as read from left to right.

I dont have a picture of it but the plans show you each and everyone of the masts and it gives them a name. Its interesting that each one is given a pet name such as Bark, Lightning, radian and so forth. Just like we call something Eagle, Blackjack or Rosebud. This individual was fasinated that I would be building a Russian submarine rather that a American submarine.

Here are the dry transfer decals that will be added sometime in the future. I have been told that you should have a very flat sheen in your paint, otherwise they will not stick. Is this true? Also I am concerned about the decal that goes on below the torpedo tubes. That area is an area of extreme compound curves, I would think that your decal would have to be shaped especially for this area. If not then when you try to put it on it will wrinkle heavily. What do you think?

In this picture that Scaleships sent me you can clearly see that the dry transfer is on there. How did he do it? Also the paint looks glossy.

I realize these are dry transfers, not decalomania, but if you have some extra characters for practice you might try the styrene modelers friend, MicroSol decal solvent from Microscale industries. About 3 bucks.
I have never tried it with transfers but it really works well with decals.

I would hazard a guess that he has sprayed the hull with a matt finish, applied the transfers, then applied a satin clear coat.

Thanks Kerry and Subculture. I think I will try to email Scaleships and see what they can tell me.

After removing the foam that was in the bottom hull and transfering it to the bottom edge of the upper hull to get it at the design waterline I refloated it. At that point it was clear that there was too much foam in the front so I took out two sets of foam sticks and refloated it. That got us closer. Then I added some more weight to the nose to get the bow down a little more.

To get the stern up a little more, more foam was installed as you see here. It did the job in getting it to settle at an even keel.

Then Saturday morning early I took it out to the pond that I normally run in and put it thru its paces. A few problems surfaced so as I was returning to its launch point I could clearly see the port propellor part company with the boat and head down. Donning mask and snorkel I searched but I couldnt find it, That with two set screws no less. I should have used locktite!!! Scaleships says that it will be July before he will have anymore. They are $57 each plus shipping. OH WELL!! One prop provides plenty of thrust so the testing and trimming can continue. Oh the fate of the foolish!

Kevin McCloud manfg. some fine looking white metal propellors in the past. Perhaps I can get a set from him. We will see what his schedule and pricing looks like.

As you know I installed a" waterproffed" servo up front to operate the bow planes. It worked until I put it in the water, then it stopped working, then as soon as I pulled it back out of the water it immediatly started working again. So I figured that it was water getting in at the 2 connectors in the wires. I was going to solder and seal one of them but I smeared silicone/dielectric grease up inside the connecter before putting it together and I have had no further problems with that.

Kevin McCleod did agree to sell me a set of his fine props and they are on the way. According to Kevin , there are several designs for the Oscar submarines propellors. While I do not consider myself a rivet counter by any stretch of the imagination, I didnt want to purchase just any set of propellors but wanted a set that was reasonably accurate. My plan will be to Red loctite the new props to the shafts in addition to blue loctiting the dual set screws. Then when Scale Ships prop becomes available I will purchase 2 more 5mm shafts and install the brass Scale Ships props on them. Also I plan to test the white metal props for thrust exerted under full power just like I did with the supplied Scale Ships props and note any differences that the differing blade area and pitch will make.
