    You guys ever had one

You guys ever had one of those days
Nothing goes right in the Dockyard. Everything you touch turns to s--t!!
That was today!! When you have a day like that it is time to just say that is it and leave!! That is what I did!
A few nice drinks and I am feeling better.
I did come up with a great system to power my FS-1.
And I am sure I can make it work if I can build it!!
Well tomorrow is another day!! BD.

            Here are a few photos

Here are a few photos of the drive system I am working on for the FS-1.
The jet drives will be mounted directly to the end caps.
There will be a brushless motor, ESC, and servo in each short control cylinder.
I will have a small R/X cylinder in the front and a battery cylinder under the two power cylinders. That is the plan anyway. I have been told to keep the weignt in the center of the hull if I want to be able to bank or roll the sub. BD.

              I have not gotten back

I have not gotten back to the FS-1 sanding yet. I did aquire a orbital sander to try.
I wanted to post a drawing of my basic plan to power the sub.
The left stick will control the throttle and roll, the right stick will control the pitch and yaw. Different than a plane or heli but I can't get my mind past the rudder being on the left stick. I tried it with the Dolphin boat and ran it into the YMCA pool at full speed. BD.

                I did a little work

I did a little work today on the drive system. I was able to get everything mounted and it spins up good. I am using a Castle Sidewinder ESC.
I still have to do an inwater test for leaks and current draw. I am trying a different type of cooling on this design. I have mounted a copper disc on the outside of the end cap that is connected to the mounting bolts of the motor. I am hoping it will act as a radiator to pull heat from the motor. This made it a real PITA to mount and seal everything. I hope it works under load. BD.

As you can see I am very happy.
I did a full power in water test today and all went very well.
No leaks, no vibration, only drawing 15A at full power, and very good thrust.
Well within the 30A rating of the motor and ESC.
With two of these propelling the FS-1 it should be very robust.
Maybe I can have the first Flying Sub that actually flies.
Even if it leaves the water for a second it is flying.
Here is a photo of the test setup. I used a Astro Flight watt meter for the power measurements. BD.

                    I just received an email

I just received an email from Rick (Si-Fi Sub) Teskey.
He wanted to inform me that his 24" FS-1 was the first to achieve flight.
Rick said he tossed it into the air into the water one time. Ha!
Well Rick I think you have to get the buzzer on this one BBBBBZZZZZZ!!
That is an assist my friend, not powered flight.
                    Nice try though!!!! BD.

                        This is John Kinkele's FS-1.

                        This is John Kinkele's FS-1.
I don't believe John has been able to get his completely out of the water. He is a Subcommittee member that lives in CA but was in town a little over a year ago and came to one of our fun runs.
John gave me ideas for my build and a lot of my design is based on his version.
John is not able to roll his FS-1 either and is the one that told me to keep my weight centered which he did not do.
John's is the same size 14" and is based on a Lunar models static kit.
John also used the Graupner jet drives, but with 500 sized motors.
His electronics is mounted in an Otter Box. Neat trick!! I will attach a photo of the inside of John's FS-1. BD.

There was an interesting comment left on the Youtube video-

Good day, I design subs and its my hobby I want to suggest something...
What you have is sting-ray not a dolphin.
Your mini sub can easily maneuver up and down under water...
But It cant Break the surface of the water like dolphins do...
You must minimize the huge side fins put a nozzle, better if you make a long cylinder shape body.

I wanted to show a photo of three FS-1's
I took my 14" over to Don O's along with my Monogram 7.5" to do a show and tell with his wife Patty's new Teskey 16" hull.
Patty is an excellent modeler and Don finally talked her into building a sub.
Basically she wants to be able to fly it under water like an airplane.
After closely checking out Ricks excellent hull I can see I have a lot of work to do to match his FS-1.
I have added some more plastic here and there to build up the thickness in areas where it needed reshaping. It is a slow process but I will get it. BD.
