Well, BD is probably referringto the old "argument" over whether any U-boats had red below the waterline and a boot topping.

The answer is]does[/i] have the 'odd' paint scheme.

Besides......as they say, "it's my model....."

p.s. Hopefully in the next week I'll start posting photos of my Type IIC build.

I knew there would be some controversy over this paint job.So I researched it very closely before making up my mind.U-407 was a front boat out of La Specia,29th Flotilla,12-1-42 till 9-19-44 when she was lost wearing these colors. There are also pictures available to document this,as these were the colors that the Mediterranean boats wore.

I am quite familiar with the camouflage scheme used by U-boats in the Mediterranean. The one you chose is one of several schemes used. But we've never seen any photos that definitively show either a boot topping or red below the waterline.

                      Hi

many modler in the us do the red below the waterline i don`t know why? I serached the net for a long time but this was never made by the kriegsmarine. Once i read a article that at the closed end of the wwii ther was the protection color for the lower hull scarcely. The protection color for the lower hull had a high lead portion, thats what i know. There was U-573 if I correctly informed are colored red the lower hull, she was running as S01 under Spanish flag.

My guess is that many of the red-below-the-waterline U-boats seen are due to the inaccurate drawings in the Squadron publication U-boats in Action....

                          Jeff,
I have located 3 black and white pictures of U-407,AND 1 color plate.I don`t know how to post the pictures out of the books, but the books are U-BOAT WAR by TIMOTHY J. KUTTA,Squadron/signal publications page 44 upper left corner.U-407 WEARS A MOLTTLED CAMOUFLAGE SCHEME OF IRREGULAR DARK GRAY BLOTCHES OVER A LIGHT GRAY BASE.THE LOWER HALF OF THE HULL WAS USUALLY PAINTED RED WITH A SIDE BLACK BOOT TOPPING SEPERATING THE COLORS.The color plate is in this book on page 33 showing these colors on U-407.The other 2 photos are in Grey Wolves of the Sea,German U-BOAT Type VII,by Heinz J.Nowarra,Schiffler Military History VOL.63.Also in black and white.I based my choice of colors on the reference material that I was able to gather.I don`t know if the material that I use for reference is wrong.I just go by what I see and what is quoted in these reference books.

                            Oh, boy....another Squadron publication.

If you have the photos already scanned, then you could e-mail them to me and I'll get them posted for us to look at.

It's my understanding that the 'splotches' were a blue-grey in color.

Am I correct in stating that it is the caption to the photo that makes the statement about the red lower?

Even in a black & white photo, a black boot topping would be visible. Can you see one?

                            -Jeff

                            p.s. I don't have that book....will need to find/borrow one.

                              I don`t have the pictures

I don`t have the pictures scanned,so I can`t send them.I didn`t use the gray/blue because the wash I use turns the irregular dark gray, which was quoted to blue/gray.Yes the caption under the picture states,The lower half of the hull was usually painted red with a side boot topping separating the colors.Yes I can see the black line seperating the colors. And the photo in question probably was taken in the summer of 43 at La Specia.I assume that the picture is rite!
