Bob will customize a cylinder for you! Just tell him what you need. He did that for me on a custom build for a client.
That's a very good point! Bob worked with me to create a very customized size and layout for the dive module that is now in my Type II. I think that other than the diameter of the tubes used, I changed just about everything. Some of the changes will be available as configuration options to Bob's standard module builds.
Btw, it sounds like there will be almost as many XXI s in SubComEast as 212s soon
I've actually started a Type 212a boat number registry (seriously!) so that we each have unique numbers. It'll make it much easier to figure who owns which boat when looking at the photos.
Jeff if you go with a pennant system like the navy each sub in the flotilla could have a number so all the 212s would be like SSP1, SSP2 etc, my permit could be SSN6, Jim,s boomer could be SSBN7, and so on and so forth
I am, finally, back home today. Long trip! I will get back in the shop and back on the production of Type XXI kits & accessories starting Saturday. The remaining Permit kits will be kicked out as soon as the new sail mold (vacuum bagging mold) is complete, which will be next week.
The new Permit sail is all vacuum bagged carbon fiber unit for a super light, super strong kit component.

Have you ever made, or considered making an article or video describing the process you use to make your kits once the plugs are ready? I would love to see it. I have been trying to hunt down various links and articles on model ship and sub sites to build up a knowledge base. I would really like to be able to contribute to the hobby at some point and make a boat that is not currently available. No idea what that would be right now, maybe something like the HMS Conqueror or a Trench/Skate class.
The most I've ever shown was on the very old thread on the building of the master and production of the hull for my 1/32 scale Russian Shch "Pike". It is a very old thread here on the SC, but it would be the best to show you all of the materials and processes you would use to successfully make a mold and then a produce a production part from those molds without having to spend the crazy money to buy all of the expensive equipment for bagging and autoclaving, etc.

I'm not sure in what issue of the SCR it's in but along time ago I built a XX1 boat it was one of only 3 hulls put out by 1/32 Parallel before they closed down and the complete build is in the SCR. the boat did 39 different things, being 8 ft long there was ample room. It did however take 2 guy's to move it. After I came down with cancer I couldn't move it by may self. it sail well as long as you had a big area to make turns. With the props being slightly off of the center line, you needed two speed controls so you could have one prop going in one direction and the other going opposite to it. to aid in turning. It was a great project and always a crowed pleaser. I still have some old photo's of it if they would be of any help. Best Wishes..Mike Dory
Ralph, thank you directing me to that issue. I just started scoping out the June 1999 report, and wow, Mike Dory's XXI is a huge boat I also could not help noticing a boat owned by Lothar Mentz All of the pneumatics on that thing are mental.
Mike, I would love to see any other photographs you have of your XXI. I especially appreciate your article describing how you improved the steering performance. The number of systems and redundancy you have built into it is amazing. Even with a 16 channel radio how where you able to keep track of all of the different animations? In any case your article is going to be a big help for me building my XXI, even if mine is a smaller scale.
For right now, I am on standby for the WTC cylinder arrangement until Jeff an Erich have had a chance to workout their running gear. That said, there are a lot of things I can work on once I get the kit from Matt.
The late Bud Lederer had a Type XXI that was also 1/32 scale, IIRC. I remember one regatta where Skip Asay and Bud were readying the boat to run. It had multiple ballast, trim tanks and all the fixins'. I think Skip did all the electronics for Bud's model.
I wonder what happened to that boat after Bud passed?
