The WW-I boat seems to be a late Holland type.
the shape of the forward deck (and the round shape below) looks a lot like those.

Unfortunately I lost my notes but seems like it was a C-1 Type, I think.

Im going to say that its an ALPHA. Although I would have thought an Alpha would have a more complex propellor. Great picture!

I would like to know why on the Alfa that is in question why one of the rear dive planes is in the down position and the other is slightly higher. Was this normal procedure for the Alfa or is that the reason for being in drydock. I thought that I read somewhere that they had a lot of problems with the diveplane mechanism.

                  TD,

I was intrigued by that plane positioning as well. Typically, the piston seals in the hydraulic rams will leak across, eventually equalizing and allowing the weight of the planes to pull them into the full dive position, in the hard stops. The port plane must be blocked up somehow. Maybe it's something we didn't know about. Corkscrew mode for Ultra-High Speed operations!!!

                  B^)

ps- how's the weather down home? I'm from Indiana, and my mom was born in Butler.

Thats interesting, that shot just caught my eye and like they say inquiring minds need to know .Though the corkscrew effect would be something to see.

The weather is typical Western Pa. mess. This morning it was raining like a cow ------- on a flat rock and 50 degrees, tonite cold and ugly,Happy New year in western Pa.We get 4 seasons worth of weather in 24 hr.

                        TD,

Where in Western PA? I am originally from Irwin in Westmorleand County, born in Jeannette, and went to High school in Greensburg. My dad is from a small mining town called Hermanie, and my mom from another right down the road from there called Rilton.

                            Tim,

TD is in Butler. I think the evil picture gnomes ran away with the pic. An up-the-butt shot of a drydocked boat, with the port plane in rise and starboard in dive positions. Could be for corkscrew evasive maneuvering, I 'spose.

Got the last one. Soviet Charlie Class.

Okie Bill, side note: I reported today, Boat still on standdown till tomorrow. I went to the boat and went into the dock, man, I saw some stuff today that most modelers on here would give a testicle for. Too bad I only accept ample female breasts attached to hot women. We prolly gonna get wet in about 2 weeks, least thats what they told me today. Damn shame i can't get pics.....but then that would be espionage.

                                Tim,
I know all the areas mentioned very well,I trucked all over the area till I went over the road.I was born and raised in the Bethel Park,Castle Shannon area of the south hills.I now live just west of Butler, been here about 40 yr.

I thought that might be an Alfa but now that I see it more is to much of a sail there to be an Alfa. But the custom by crash is very interesting. !
