      no the sail seems wrong for beluga... the sail plus the paint scheme makes me say alfa... perhaps akula

        Now that I look at it again I think that you are right Kevin, It looks like your Akula. Only problem is where is Charlie with his tugboat? The bright sharp image tells me that it is a recent picture so............. Anybody else?

          I too think it's an Akula (Project 971 Shuka-B)....the sail-forward hull geometry looks like a perfect match. The flood vents that can be seen also seem to match. If we could see the bow rescue buoy, I think it would be a 'lock'.

              Nope I dont know for sure, the website that I got the picture off of identified it only as a Russian submarine(very helpful). Wayne Frey, where are you?

                Ok! Our next contestant on "NAME THAT SUB"!
                All I could get from the website is a screen capture. The russian text says that at the time of the photo it was a test submarine BS-555 somewhere in the Baltic sea on Sea trials.

                  A quick internet search shows: Project 1840 'LIMA' class submarine, which apparently was an experimental diesel-electric sub.
