Regarding the SSBN pictures, look at them closely, compare the fairwater plane height on the 629 boat on the building ways (D. Boone) with the first pic you posted. You should be able to see they both are mounted quite high, now compare with the height on the other boats.
First visual clue to tell a 627 or earlier boomer from a 640 class is the height of the planes, 640's were mounted down low and the earlier boats were higher.
The 4 (8 total) holes in the superstructure are called the buick mod or F.E.D. they are for the five inch evasion device launchers which were externally mounted, externally loaded acoustic evasion device launch tubes.

          Re: Lets play a game!

The Lafayette class had a split vertical rudder and the 640's didn't, don't know about the 627's. Does this mean when turning the 640's had smaller rudder angle than the others?

Thanks for your help Bill. On the post that has the 12 pictures, all of those boats are from the Benjamin Franklin class, according to Navsource.

Put glasses on and observe the 12 pics that "navsource" say's are 640 class, look at 2nd pic, It appears to have a hull number of 629 and a name like Daniel Boone. Is Navsource wrong?
Is greenman wrong. Was the Boone a 640 wannabee.
              Inquiring minds want to know.
Could it really be a 627 class boomer in disguise with a trick name and hull number?
              DUH!
              Bob.

                Re: Lets play a game!

I'll wager the wrongness starts with NAVSOURCE! 40-60 % of the pictures posted are either mis-identified or mis-captioned. As one example, they have the EB delivery official ships picture (b/w) of USS Narwhal (SSN 671), c. 1969, captioned as being taken in Puget Sound, when it was actually the Atlantic, south of Long Island Sound. The color picture is captioned correctly. They were both taken the same day, same place, same camera, same guy! Narwhal was never underway in Puget under her own power. She was towed from Norfolk, VA. I have spent some time checking their pictures out for los of boats and they ain't real super good at being the best information available.

                  Re: Lets play a game!

I agree, Bill. Navsource is focused more on quantity of images than quality of references. To be fair, they take solicitations and use the info supplied by the donor. Often that is where the errors come from.

The last fleetboat image is USS Wahoo (SS-238) at NAS Alameda on August 8, 1942. Her CO at that time was Lt Cdr Marvin Kennedy.

bharris, actually Navsource included this picture under 642 Kamehameha because they were stating that the 642 boat was under construction to the left. I didnt read that caption and included it as a 640 boat. Sharp eyed devil you.

I guess it's an early Chinese Type 039A or Song Class submarine.
Hmmm, The front of the sail looks like it came from a Romeo class.

Redboat comes thru again with a homerun!

Notice the difference in the sail from the Song class. Wonder what thats all about? Research suggests that it is a dirivative of the Russian " Romeo".
