the foam everyone always speaks of is the blue or pink insulation foam sheeting that can be found at places like Home Depot or Lowe's. Typically it's a rigid foam, dense, and it doesn't wick up water. It's used inside hulls to aid bouyancy by displacing water, while strategic placement of pieces of this foam can help balance/adjust your model so it sits correctly in the water.
