    As Mike Dory

As Mike Dory mentioned above, here is an image of the Proposed Antioch, California -West Coast sub regatta- site for October 2005. Pool repairs will be done after Labor Day 2004, preventing its use by SubCommittee. Pool normally mandated for use by swimming public during summer months. Pool is chlorinated and unheated (no fine film of tiny bubbles on hulls to upset trim), 80 yards long, 40 yards wide, 4.5 feet deep goes shallow gradually toward 'beach'. Modern restroom and snack bar and picnic tables, 30 yards from parking lot(paved asphalt pathway to transport models. Planning on this being a 'all submarine only event'. Planning a 'course', but un-determined at this time regarding 'Judging'. Comments welcome. Got okay verbally from East Bay Regional Parks superintendent, but need to be patient till 2005 with written permission granted. Parks would have liked us to use pool in October 2004, but major repairs would need to be done at that time. We will be patient and will keep in close communication with East Bay Regional Parks. I will co-ordinate regatta event time with other SC regatta events for best success all around. Tenitive plan now is early October 2005.

Check my SC homepage 'Dolphin' for further images.

        Steve,

        Is the West Coast Military

        Steve,

Is the West Coast Military Regatta officially dead? If so, that is a shame, as it was a way for the sub guys and the surface guys to play together, and attacted a large audience of potentially new entrants into the hobby due to the very public location. Although the fly casting ponds may not be available, Spreckles is in the process of being drained, worked on, and refilled, with a new aeration system along the perimeter. This is a great site for a regatta, with potential for local and national media exposure along with the thousands of casual vistors on a nice fall weekend. Just a thought.

          Hello Kurt, Tom and others

Hello Kurt, Tom and others interested,

Respectfully, you must ask Tom Anderson if the West Coast Military Regatta is actually officially dead. Talking with Tom, it sounds dead. Talking to Tom Anderson at work today, Tom is getting a location at a Benicia, California City swimming pool for a SC sub regatta in October 2004 in the short term. Long term is Antioch, Contra Loma Res. swimming pool in October 2005 and there after. Repairs to Contra Loma force us to use the Benicia site while repairs to a crack in the Contra Loma pool is repaired in the fall of 2004.

The fly casting ponds in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park located not far from famous Spreckles Lake was (and is) a wonderful site, large, a constant depth 'sea floor bottom' free of natural obstructions, clear water for viewing, and easy recovery if a sub ever got into trouble. Don't forget that very cool step down below the water level launching basin too! The fly casting club reportedly wishes not to continue the West Coast Military Regatta at that location. Spreckles Lake is an excellent site for submarine operations as long as the skipper doesn't minds the murky very 'scale' water. I don't mind, but others may not be so comfortable with that. I have operated my Skipjack and Albacore there without problems.

Tom Anderson will call the shots in regards to whether military surface ships are welcome at the Benicia 2004 event. That is Tom's discretion since he is organizing this particular event. I am planning the Antioch 2005 event and hopefully those there after too. In respect to the Antioch 2005 sub regatta - it would be officially an 'all submarine' event. Considering a Destroyer (DDG) maybe in the Antioch regatta's operational planning for perhaps a 'Perisher' exercise for any of those, if interested. It would involve a series of submarine vs. Destroyer maneuvers - scoring for aggressive behavior on the submarine's part, and for safety respecting the so called 'go deep circle' on the part of both vessels. What sort of game is this? Frankly I am still making this up as I go! Any ideas? A submarine 'regatta course' is as of now also planned for this event, but no awards per say - just an old fashion European style 'Submarine fun run' in theme.

            Steve,

            I really like the idea

            Steve,

I really like the idea of creating some sort of "Perisher" course! It will probably need to take into account the fact that each boat driver (sub and target) can see each other at all times, but this sounds like something that can be solved.

Maybe 'award' each successful course driver with some sort of certificate of completion. In other words don't do a 1st place, 2nd place, etc.

If it makes sense, I will volunteer to help 'design' the course program. I will also be more than happy to furnish "SubCommittee dolphins" to those who pass the course. (it's an SC logo with a pair of dolphins on either side.) Folks can pin them to their favorite submarine baseball cap.

            -Jeff

p.s. Hmmm....if there is to be no course navigation competition, I guess this means that Mike Dory may not be showing up?

              Guy's -- We go back

Guy's -- We go back to the dictionary and the meaning of the word REGATTA " A contest on the water with boats " Steve's idea is wonderful and it meets the defition of a regatta. (Unlike last years event in R.I. Which was just a boat show, as there was no contest on the water due to the poor conditions present) So you can bet I'll be there. More importantly, it's a safe environment to run in, should you lose your boat. A safe environment to run boats in, is in my opinion, The first thing you must have if your going to be putting on any regatta or fun run. Your asking others to come and they should have some good expectations of being able to recover there boat. "Not a well maybe, that just won't do." That's the difference between what Steve is planning and what went on last year in R.I. It's a safety issue. Now I'll be the first to admit, I've been told I'm a little conserative but I've come to being that way, through some very hard, sad and costly experience. May none of you, ever have to go home with only your boat stand. Best wishes to all Mike Dory
