Reading the Indianapolis Admirals Newsletter and seeing that the Indy Admirals and SR6 want the 2005 SubRegatta, I found it strange that no one has commented on it. I for one would be overjoyed and would welcome it. Comments?
hi Casey,
from what I gathered talking to some of the guys, it really depends on if the site will be completed in time. I know its great right now for what were doing, but the construction by the pond is still in work, and thats the big question????? Will it be done soon enough to make plans..... I hope so... Jeff J
Casey,
One other thing , in my opinon, I know everyone has one , last years subron6 fun run in Carmel was about as close to the real thing I had ever seen. Can't wait for June 5th. Got brand new batts in my type IX and it keeps trying to jump off the bench and head to the lake without me...... Jeff J

Jeff send me an e-mail to w4crt@yahoo.com so I can send you a pic.
Casey this subject has come up on other threads before.
I do belive Jeff is correct the construction is a factor in how soon the regatta can be held at that local. when it is held there, i sure will make the trip!! i am sure it will be a great event!!!

Guy's - By definition, you can't have a regatta unless you can run the course. This is what happened last year in R.I. The condititions were so bad at the lake , no one felt safe in running the course. This isn't to say that the guys putting on the event didn't do an outstanding job for they worked very hard. It's just the lake was a weed infested mud hole. I too look forward to seeing the regatta somewhere else where the conditions are safer for running. Best Wishes Mike
...you're no being fair. The lake at Johnston RI is far from being a weed infested mudhole. No argument (from me) that there have been a lot more weeds than anyone would like to see....but it's far from a mud hole. In fact the lake is quite deep once you get off the manmade beach/launchnig area.
And I feel obligated to point out that last year's running of the course was canceled on Sunday due to high winds (and too many waves!). It's not fair to imply (intentionally or otherwise) that the cancellation was due to weeds/mud.
Finally, I would ask that we be careful and note that there is a school of thought among some SubCommittee members that it is not necessary to hold a course competition in order to have a regatta. It's a matter of personal preference....neither is 'right or wrong.'
"And I feel obligated to point out that last year's running of the course was canceled on Sunday due to high winds (and too many waves!). It's not fair to imply (intentionally or otherwise) that the cancellation was due to weeds/mud."
Hi all,
Unless thunder and lighting threatened, then I could very much understand but ....Too many waves? Oh dear me!
I know I'll probably get a few shots fired over my bow for this but ......
I thought a SubRegatta was all about having fun. Checking out the great vendor tables, seeing old and new faces, boats and ideas. Maybe winning a prize at the raffle and in general running boats. No one has lost a boat at the reagatta even though a few sunk on their own accord. The only real incident of weeds that I know of was when people went where they were told to avoid. We are running boats in a pond not a swimming pool. Common sense should prevail.
If another Regatta is held I would support it. I also think that as a hobby with a small membership we should support all events and strive to make them better. This negative complaining is not good for our hobby. And please, remenmber that we are not going to get back on the Sub Base since September 11, 2001 so lets move on !!!
I would like to see more support and less belly aching and complaining. Just my two cents worth.
No more belly aching, just want it told to us straight. Many in Europe (chiefly England) and here on the west coast of the USA have begun to do just our own thing here now. Everyone is now happy. We will run our boats in high waves, and those others can have their 'mud hole'.
Guy's -- Somewhere along the line a little truth in advertisement should be a good thing, don't you think! We shouldn't be saying " This is a great place for a regatta" When in reality The conditions were so bad that no one was able to run the course (We may debate this but the facts remain the same No one was able to run) But. did we say that why Know. We talked about the old friends we met and the new ideas we saw. And yes while that was most enjoyable It still was a weed infested mud hole, (Dave Merriman didn't have trouble finding his lost boat because of waves but due to muddy water) I drove 3,700 Miles, spent more then a fair amount of money. To go to what was just a model boat show. To say I was more then disappointed is and understatement. If we can't tell each other the truth about an event then where does that leave us? Webester defines a regatta " As a contest between boats on water" Not as a bunch of good old boys trading stories, no matter how much fun that maybe. In the future, I can only speek for myself, But I going to be asking some very poined questions, about the conditions at the lake before I again invest that amount money and time. Maybe you should too. Mike
I know the more senior members are probably saying Rob got suckered into it but I gotta say it anyway.
I do not think Jeff LaRue is a liar or for that matter any of the other people who worked so hard to put on an event that was enjoyed by most of the people who attended. Jeff Larue and Jim Wheeler have been honest in every interaction I have had with them. The weather does what it will. The decision not to have the competition was made by the people involved for the reasons stated. That is it.
Steve and Mike what you are doing with your continuous complaining is destroying an event that is positive to our hobby. I do not think you realize the negative impact your actions are having on our small but great hobby. Until you and your group find a better site and take the initiative to put on something better its time for you to grow up, stop complaining and act like the men you should be instead of bunch of non-constructive and counter-productive conspiracy buffs. Next thing you’ll be saying Hoffa is buried in the pond, the men that killed Kennedy sponsor the Regatta and Elvis is eating donuts at the Johnston Dunkin Dounts with Jeff LaRue.
I keep hearing that your group has a better site. Where is the regatta you want to sponsor? It was offered to you. You turned it down. Where is your commitment? Why don't you contribute in a positive way? I guess it is easier to stay at home and complain about what others worked hard to make happen than do something yourself.
Until you and your group take on the responsibility and sponsor something better you have not earned the right to tear down what others who have taken on the responsibility and done the work. A little work and a better Regatta sponsored by your group would at least help the hobby.
Hi Rob I think you put into words my feelings. I was at the
Regatta and I had a GREAT time. When you are running in a pond you can't control MOTHER NATURE. All this guy does is complain. It's people like this that make new people think is this the hobby I want to join. Is Carmel the only place in the Midwest to have a Regatta? It looks and sounds like a great place. But If it is not ready drop it. When it's ready we will come.
Thanks much big John. I got a little carried away but most new people wanting to join the hobby come to the forum and what they see here greatly influences them. We have a great group of suppliers and members and an executive board that does a tremendous job of supporting the hobby. We can accomplish a lot more working together in a positive way.
Many of us, at times myself included, fall into the trap of comparing Johnston Park with Groton. We lament the loss of decent water, the covered pavilion, the covered driver’s stand, the nice launching beach, the decent parking area, etc. Johnston Park isn’t Groton. Groton is history. It just ain’t gonna happen again. Let’s get over it and move on.
Yes, there are weeds in Johnston, but guess what? There were weeds in Groton, too. But the SubRon 4 guys spent a lot of time and energy to clear a good-sized area for our use. Those who ventured out of that area must look in the mirror for someone to blame. As far as not having competition on Sunday because of high winds (and waves), I seem to recall a substantial number of competitors stating they weren’t going to run the course because of it. I guess the SubRon 4 guys paid attention to what the people were saying. Should they be put down for that? I don’t think so.
SubRon 4 should be commended for the effort they put into having a SubRegatta. Bravo Zulu! And since that part of the country is their back yard, I’ll have to assume there aren’t any better locations. But I’ll be willing to bet that if another, better location is discovered in that area, SubRon 4 will move to it.
The most important part of all this is that SubRon 4 has stepped up to the plate and done what is necessary to have a full blown SubRegatta. Personally, I think they’ve done a pretty good job.
On another note, I can’t wait for the construction to be finished in Carmel!
