    I usually never get involved

I usually never get involved in these regatta discussions but I feel I have to say I have nothing but respect and thanks for the work and time any one puts in to one of these events. I am probably one of the only ones (except for maybe Skip) that has attended all of the regattas since day one. I came to the first one with no boat and just a love for submarines. I had a great time then and have had a great time at all the regattas since. I look foreward to seeing old friends checking, out other guys boats, and yes running my boats in the pond. I have helped put together shows like this before and I know this is an thankless job and it takes alot of time and commitment. I for one had no problems running my sub last year. Believe me if there are weeds in the pond they will find the teeth on my Nautilus like steel to a magnet. I just hope the regattas will continue no matter were they are held, and I for one will support them and the ones who organize them. Thanks to all, Dave.

        I have read the comments

I have read the comments on this thread and I have several observations.

        1. Mike is entitled to his opinion and he feels that the location isn't suitable.
        2. Jeff Larue and others that were on site and they have their opinions and they feel the site was acceptable.

All parties have there opinions and while Mike's opinion is in the minority his opinion still should be heard, but Mike should not declare the others liars because they do not agree with him. Is any site perfect...hardly? While Carmel looks promising and I do look forward to going there, I bet there will be someone who will find fault with something there.

Let’s look at the Competition being suspended on Sunday because of the wind and high waves. If the majority of the people there felt that the winds were too high and convinced the majority to suspend the competition, who are we to disagree as we sit and read the thread. If you weren't there you can only view it as history as you were not part of it.

I'm sorry but I need to set the record straight here. Steve (Dolphin) you continue to make non constructive comments on the board. i.e.]replacement editor.[/b] Yes folks I'm going to put it down here and now, that if we don't get a replacement for Jeff there will be a delay in the September issue. We can not just go out and purchase editorial services as they would not have any knowledge of the hobby or subject matter. Don't worry about next year SubRegatta... make priority number one getting the Editor’s position filled.

        Thanks,
        Jim Wheeler

          You know it's a shame

You know it's a shame that one can't ask a simple question around here without someone turning into a personal issue and spoiling the intent of said question. With that, let me say I don't give a crap about the old pond or current pond. I asked a question about CARMEL. Stick with the subject as it was intended or start your own " I hate this and that" thread, but leave this one alone.

              Folks,

              Mike Dory has done more

              Folks,

Mike Dory has done more for the R/C submarine hobby than 99.9% of the other SC membership. He has pioneered the technology, and more importantly, been an enthusiastic and patient spokesman for the hobby for many, many years. He deserves far more respect than what I have seen in this thread. As Lee Upshaw said above, many folks running model submarines today are building on the skills of men such as Mike and Skip Assay.

He regularly runs his boats in the harshest of model enviorments - salt water - and if Mike says a venue is not suitable then I would take that to the bank. He has run in places and conditions I would hesitate to throw a model tug into. I would listen very carefully to his advice regarding regattas. I would not in any way, shape or form, suggest that he should "grow up".

                from what I gathered talking

from what I gathered talking to some of the guys, it really depends on if the site will be completed in time. I know its great right now for what were doing, but the construction by the pond is still in work, and thats the big question????? Will it be done soon enough to make plans..... I hope so... Jeff J
                Hi Jeff and Casey -
The 2005 regatta is well over a year from now.
The pond is done and has been for a year.
The parking lots and surrounding buildings will be done by the end of this summer - we might have been able to do one this summer, but there would have been a little extra stress involved in getting parking close enough and we didn't want to get off on the wrong foot for our first try at it by making people have to lug their stuff an extra 100 yards to the pond or try to figure out some sort of shuttle bus. By next year that won't be a problem.

By the way - we have both of you guys on our list of volunteers... the host club doesn't get to just show up and play so be careful what you wish for!

Hope to see you both and all other SubCommittee members at the June 5th fun run. See the SubRon6 message board for more information - hotels etc. Feel free to post any SR6 questions there.

                  There is a regatta sponsored

There is a regatta sponsored by 4 midwest clubs at Carmel in July. For the last two years this regatta was held in Ft. Wayne, so it has a (short) history of success. I encourage all Sub Committee members to attend this year, with a boat if possible. Think of it as a "training run" for the SubRegatta. The last two Great Lakes Regattas were well organized, the events ran smoothly, and the weather was great. I encoutrage all SubRon6 members to attend this regatta, and we can have more discussions abolut hosting the SubRegata.

                    Guy's -- I have said

Guy's -- I have said all along that the guy's who put on last years regatta, did an outstanding job. No one could have done more. These guys put their heart and soul into the event. No one can knock there effort, least of all me. As to the site well that another subject. The weeds while bad, weren't so bad that you couldn't run. The big problem was the clarity of the water (mud) This was the problem in Dave Merriman getting is boat back, now why he decided to run it at all, when he knew it was low on propel or have it negatively ballasted is another question. If you can't see a 2Ft in diameter bright yellow saucer sub, about 9 ft from the bank. What chance do you have in finding a Dark gray/ Black Sub 25 ft foot from the beach? This is what makes this site the problem that it is. We've all lost boats, myself included. It can be a mighty empty feeling to go home with only your boat stand. Oh yes, with the help of Tim S. and about 5 other divers and 2 hours of searching, Dave got his boat back. This is called "LUCK" You have to ask your self, do you feel that lucky. You need to be able to see at least 6 inches or so into any water you run in. I wish you all, the luck in the world. Mike

                        I would like to clarify

I would like to clarify something for Lee Upshaw, Kurt and others; I never said that Mike Dory has not contributed positively to the hobby – he has!!! His past contributions are used and seen in many of our subs and the hobby would be lessened without his great contributions.

The purpose of my post is to point out that what he is doing now is not good for the hobby. Why? What is wrong with pointing out problems? It is one thing to point out a problem and offer a solution to the people who can make changes for the better but once those people and the general population that is involved know then the purpose has been served. I think it is safe to say that Mike's opinions and feelings were well known shortly after the last SubRegatta. To continue these sniping attacks when no good purpose can come of it crosses the line from constructive contribution to abusive counter-productive activities that hurt the hobby. I fail to see what good continuing to expound his opinion in the SubReport and in unrelated posts in this and other forums does.

I would like add that the search for Dave’s sub was successful. The time it took was delayed by other subs running in the area and other activities. It did not take 2 hours of continuous searching to find his sub. It was not luck. Other subs have gone done in the pond. Most were black and they all were found. None were in for more than a few hours. Most were recovered in less than 30 minutes. We run subs in the pond and it is not uncommon to have submerged subs running and visible 50-60 feet from shore and several feet deep. This varies and is dependent on the weather. Rain and wind can stir things up as they would in any open pond. We were unfortunate with the weather last year. That does not mean that we will not have great clarity this year. We have to take our chances hear as we would at any other site. Until some one else take on the responsibility we have what we have. The site is not perfect and neither is any other but it does have many good points.

Mike your comments went from constructive to counter-productive many months ago. They are preventing others from advancing and enjoying the hobby as effectively as they could. I do not understand why you continue these sniping attacks via unrelated posts and threads after nearly a year has gone by. At best they may negatively impact attendance and enjoyment others can have at this years SubRegatta.

You and others were offered the opportunity to contribute by moving the SubRegatta to another location, one more suitable to your tastes. You declined.

I would also like to apologize to Casey for detracting from his thread. But I felt that if Mike is going to continue to use such threads repeatedly to further his negative campaign then others should be able to expand and respond further. He has used other threads in a similar way. This will be my last post on this thread. I only responded here this time because the rest of the discussion was on this thread.

                          I hope the city regulations

I hope the city regulations will allow vendors at the regatta if it is indeed held at Carmel in 2005. Anyone know if this will be a problem? I sure would like to buy some stuff there.

                            hey Casey, Tim, I would

hey Casey, Tim, I would also like to see vendors at fun runs, regattas. The St.Louis location won't allow this, not the club itself, I think its Union Stations rules. anyway, Tim, if you guys need me just give me a yell. My e-mail is messed up again, so leave a message here and I will call you. See you guys June 5th. Jeff J

                              Guy's -- Rob is right

Guy's -- Rob is right when he says "we've said all that needs to be said on this topic". Although we disagree on many of the issues on the subject. It will be up to each of us, as to if we will attend an event and run a boat, at that lake in R.I. We all know the risks involved. I wouldn't have ever even considered this site for a regatta, with the conditions that were present when I was there. However, perhaps these conditions were better in the past and maybe will be better in the future, weather permitting. Being perpared with swim fins and a mask is never a bad idea. It's always good to see and share new ideas even if you can't or choose not to run due to conditions. Just know that going into it. Our pound maybe salt water, but we can see all the way to the bottom 15 ft or so. Perhaps weve just been more fortunate then others. Speeking of regatta's Steve Reichmuth is working on a site for a west coast regatta that looks very promising but it won't be ready till Spring or fall (Steve's choice) of 2005. I've seen this site and it's outstanding. Tom Anderson is also working on securing a new site for a regatta, I'm not sure if this will be ready in 2004 or 05. What I am sure of is, if you come to one of these events, you can have complete confidence of being able to retreve your boat shold something unforseen happen. I have faith that the guys putting on events in the midwest will also have these conditions present. I look forward to seeing you all at one of these regatta's My very best wishes to all Mike

"A Picture is worth 1000 words"
For those of you who haven't been able to see the water conditions at War Memorial Park, Johnston, RI, site of the upcoming "04 Subregatta, I suggest that you view a couple of videos at the Subron4 web site, located at the bottom of this post. Click on "Videos under 1 MB" in the left hand column, and choose the last video. If you want to download the next to last video, you will see a degraded video from the camera on my sub, which was converted from analog to digital video, and was not edited. It does, however, show the ability to run a model, with an on-board video camera, in that lake, at the '03 Subregatta.
I had a sub lose power, years ago, at the Groton site and was standing in 4ft. of water looking for it. It was on the bottom, not 5ft. away from me, and I couldn't see it. I also got weeds tangled on my prop there, but it was a good place for the Regatta.
