Casey...Now that you read your SCR or at least looked at it....how can you say that there is no technical articles in the magazine. You may not have an interest in the type but they are very specific for the Dumas Akula. Is Art Broder's ballast system not techinical enough? The issue before had articles on even more upgrades for the U-47. Come on Casey did Dave put you up to this? Dave is welcome to come and post here any time he likes provided he plays by our organizations rules and not his own. Dave exiled himself and he has no one but himself to blame. Now go ahead and blast me if you feel I'm wrong, but show me how we can do it better.

Why not have the best

Why not have the best of both worlds ?? When I was in charge of Subcom-On I created a monthly newsletter so that our members could know what is going on. There was one copie online, on our website, that was password protected so that people with a computer could read it online as soon as it was writen.
And for people who wanted it there was a printed version that was mailed to the people who wanted it, weither they had a computer or not. All they had to do was request it.
Now I don't really see how is it that people who want to read it online want to get it for free ?? As long as the file is password protected so that only members can read it, it will not be free. And yes it is possible to protect pdf files so that they cannot be copied/printed/etc... there is a full security suite for these files.

As far as the content of the SCR, I used to be a member in 2001 and received the 4 reports for that year, I didn't renew the year after because I was a bit disappointed in the reports as most of the articles were about obscure subs from the early 1900, and too much "historical" for my taste, instead of being more "hands on" with model subs.
I don't know if the reports are still the same, but I have heard that they have been getting a lot better, which I guess is good.
If you guys are open to receiving articles from non-members I would be more than happy to write colums and various how-to, helps, etc.... either online or for the paper SCR or both or holographic display or whatever medium you decide to use.

(Folks may be interested to learn that what we send to the printer is a collection of PDF files. All of the issues that I have been responsible for have been done this way...essentially providing us with an online capability already)

I enjoy my paper printed magazines, and I would pay more money to keep them.

The "online version" (Jeff back me up here) is 90% done already at the time of each publishing, because the paper version is transmitted electronically via .pdf files. So an online version would not kill the paper magazine by virtue of being a time hog.

I also don't believe an online version will keep our members from paying dues. Look at the SC members as a whole. We're not a bunch of college kids in a car club. We're a bunch of middle class men (mostly) with technical aptitude and a little money to spend on our toy(s). Finer people are to be found nowhere, except perhaps over on www.surgeonchat.com, where they are currently discussing the shortcomings of the newest Porche. Aside from them, we're the most respectable enthusiast group on the net.

I don't think our guys will decide to stop paying their dues because they can get the rag for free. I like the rag, but it's not the only draw, just a bonus. That's why if the articles suck, I'm not too hung up on it. They DON'T suck, but if they did I would live with it.

Remember that arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded...

First off ... Safrole - I think your comment about Special Olympics participants was totally out of place here and is not funny.
Now ... I want to speak my piece about the SCR and vote for it staying a Print publication which can be taken anywhere and read anytime. If it were to be an on-line report, it would become one of those hyperspace happenings that could cease to exist if the net, servers or SubCom were to die, but as a print publication, it can go on forever. I do endorse publishing past issues on CDs for personal library purposes for persons who couldn't get the 'real thing' when they first came out. Even then, I would recommend they not be done until after two years. Editing is a hard and time consuming task and not everyone can do it. Jeff did an excellent job or a long time. He had some great help, but could have used more. A publication like SCR needs the effort of many people in writing news, Tech and feature articles in addition to providing photography and historical stories. Stringers send in club news and items about individuals to make interesting reading. Lets keep SCR and make it even better than it has been.

But why go thru all of these problems?
Why not try to get a list of the ones wanting the paper in paperformat and the ones who want them in pdf or perhaps somepeople want both?
Regarding servers all you probably need 1-2 ftp servers on pretty good cables and you are all set. We can use member id and login as login on the site perhaps.
Regarding the security it is a harder nut to crack,but Im sure there has to be some way of doing it.
Another option is to just have a server with the old pdf files, and continue mailing the SCR report, the pdf files on the net could be 1 perhaps 2 issues after the ones you get in the mail, and also you would have to be logged in to be able to retrieve it.
Don't know just my opinion, Don't think a question like this should start a revolt in the forum.
I also want to thank the 2 persons that have helped me in this forum, a big thanks to Bobbuilder for this incredible website and all your answers to my mails, and to Jeff off course I know I haven't even had the chance to read the SCR yet but as soon as I have had a problem you are there 100%.
I have a server at home but unfortunatly I think it is not enough to host the traffic that we are talking here since its only on a 2.5mbit
But for programs and stuff I am villing to help for those who take the enourmeus responsiblility like Jeff and the others in the SCR and member board.

Many magazines, modeling or not, post excerpts from their current issues on their websites along with a breakdown of the rest of the contents. The information serves as both a public service and a teaser to entice people to pay for a subscription and get more. Archiving past SCR issues on the web would enhance the site's content and could help draw in new members.

I agree the unscrupulous can bandy this around, but then again we have cheap photocopying which can readily reproduce printed articles.

Generally, in my experience, modellers are a pretty honest bunch, so I don't think piracy would be a big concern.

For those that would like to read the report whilst on the bog (john, khazi etc.)- a printer is a simple and cheap option.

But yes my thought was back issues...
I don't think that modelers are a bunch of piratet't that want's to ruin their own club.
but isn't it pretty sad that we are splitting this discussion? since this thread is very much alike the one about Jeff is leaving the SCR report. Perhaps we should move our thoughts to that topic?

It appears we are all getting a little off base in my view. The real issue here is the ability to get people involved in the
the running and supporting of the Sub Committee. If you have read the report and the on going diaogue concerning the club
there are just not enough volunteers to meet the needs. We need people for regattas, executive committee and the report. My personal opinion is that the whole organization is at a turning point. I would like the magazine to continue in a printed format for similar reasons that others have suggested. The real issues as Jeff has stated is the man power to generate articles and help do the work required to make it happen. I do not know what I can assist with, but I will once again offer my help to make it happen. Ron

Just my two bits worth, but the printed version is the way to go. An internet version may be of some limited interest, but just try to take it over to a friends house, or to work, or to almost any other place where someone may be interested in building a model. The internet is fast and free, but is just so much virtual hot air for many applications.
