....don't worry, you won't catch #### for your comments. A number of us have been debating these very same points for a while now.
We actually are in the process (albeit slowly) of getting all of the back issues of the SCR into PDF format so that they can be made available either online through the SC web site or via CDrom.
I think that it is a very pertinent (i.e. good) question that has now been publically raised regarding the usefulness and possible future of the SCR. I should point out one thing - even if the SCR were to be made an entirely online publication it would still take 99% of the same level of effort to produce. This makes the assumption that an online version would be of the same style and quality of the current printed SCR. The work to turn article and column submissions into finished work is likely to remain the same.
Hi
Being a new member as I am, I have not yet accured any SCR reports, the good side of getting it online is that it will save the committee the money it costs to send it worldwide but on the other hand with all those members surely someone will slip away the info to a friend and the friend lets a couple of other friends read and so on.
It is a big step and as I said Im still waiting for my first issue so I don't know that much yet
The printed version should still be available to those not online, but obviously it will cost more (postage etc.).
I subscribe to an online model flight publication (rcmicroflight.com).
It's great because I can download and print or save the articles of interest, and leave the rest, plus I can easily reference old articles withput having to wade through issues- online indexing is fantastic.
I'd also like to see an easier way to pay my membership dues i.e. Paypal or nochex.
My vote is for the online format as well. I typically get my publications several weeks after they are mailed, as US/Canada mail is incredibly slow. The online format would mean that I can instantly access the latest SCR and download it. It would also make searching for relevant information far faster.
On the other hand, some method of copy protection would need to be implemented in order to limit the more indescriminate members from distributing these files without permission. No one will pay for something that they can obtain for free from a friend.
I'm not familiar enough with .pdf files, .ftp sites, or copy protection to offer any suggestions, but I'm sure that someone in the membership is.

Casey, Jeff, and all the rest who frequent these message Boards.
I know this will get a few more Torpedo Salvos fired my way but......
You Have To Be Kidding here.
For so many years now these message boards in my opinion have caused more greif for the Subcommittee and the EC then can be calculated, I have read more Flame Wars in here then all of the other sites I have been party to, put together.
I have expected that Jeff would finally throw in the towel on a virtually thankless no pay job for some time now, and to read the BS that has been on these boards criticising how things were done, wiening about where their report is and why it is not done yet, but never a...Hey Jeff can I step in and help out, what do you need? I have seen shots taken at Jeff in here as well...well folks the time has come to 'pay-the-piper' as they say.
I would like to be able to help with the report myself, I used to do a lot of writting for Scale Ship Modeller back in the late 1980's amd early 90's, but my committment to the Scale Shipyard is taking 70+ hours a week...talk about a thankless under paying job.....I would love to have the time to take care of the report, it would be something new and fresh to do with a bit of change every month, I have a tough enough time just getting my addvertisements to Jeff in time.
Well it is not a good thing for the Subcommittee to have the Report go away, in fact it would be the death knell of this organization.
The Idea of just having the Report online is ludicrous at best and will still lead to the end of this organization, beleive it or not folks, there are a lot of our members who do not have a computer and are not going to impose on someone else to use theirs so that they can read the report, the idea of having a friend download it for them will probably last for an issue or two but that is about all that can be hoped for.

I have to vote for the paper verson. It is more convenient to read and check back to for refference. I like to take my copy with me to read if I am going places. That would be a pain in the ASS! with a laptop. I would much rather sit in the back yard in the summer with a cold one (Reading my paper version thank you). Just one bubbleheads opinion. Dave.

I totally enjoy the SCR it is well done and a great source of information. I joined last summer so I am a new member of the
Committee. I have ordered back issues of the SCR and
find them a good source of technical info. I hope the Paper
version of the SCR continues. It's easier than going on line.

Yes, (what Lee said)
I look forward to going to the mail box when I know the next issue is out. Something fun instead of all the bills. My thanks to everyone involved in putting together the SCR. The paper version is something I can take to work, a club meeting and share with other like minded folks. Many of the older generation, fellow (St.Louis Admirals) have never touched a computer, and rely on paper publications for info, plans, events, etc... Looking fwd to the mailbox again this week, thanks Jeff Jones
I don't think anyone is suggesting that the Report should go solely online, that wouldn't be a good idea at all, IMHO.
I do think, however, that it would be nice to have the option.
Maybe we need two editors, one for the paper version and one for online.
Far from spelling the end of the organisation, I think a move such as this would help it grow, especially if online subscription resulted in a reduction in subs for overseas membership, which owing to postage is considerably higher than for US members.
Regarding the website- I never would have discovered The Sub Committee if it hadn't been on the WWW, and I'm sure a lot of others would second that.
Personally I don't give a hoot if the report comes through my letterbox, or via my outlook express inbox.
However, maybe before any decision is taken, a vote should be cast amongst the membership.
The the Members and especially the non-members here
I cannot agree with having it both ways here
I think that the people who want it online, want it for free, it just does not work that way boys and girls, you want the materials that are in the report, then pay up, or just...well you know what to do otherwise, I do not think I need to add that for you.
The internet has people starting to think that everything in here should be free, no way baby.....(am I starting to sound like D. Merriman, hmmm)
To put the entire report online would be foolish and detract from the printed version, this would actually raise cost, as the number of issues printed would drop and make the per issue cost increase.
How is it that the people out there can afford to pay $500.00 to over $1000.00 for a sub hull or kit, some of you have several sitting in the shop or in the rafters just waiting, and then have the cajohnaes (?) to sit there say that they can't affort to be a member, #### for some of you out there, this is less then the cost of 2 cartons of death sticks...what maybe 4 cans of wasted propel, look at the money you throw away each week on BS stuff and compare that to a whole year of what the SCR provides.
Gees people, and I am sure there are enough people out there for some of you to get off you ### and help Jeff put the SCR together every three months, Plan Ahead.
I have already contacted Jeff and Volunteered to help out in a manner that he requires, I will be looking through my files here to find something that I can write up with photos and submit.
