[color=#000000]I agree with what has been said about keeping the printed SCR. I'm one who works online all darn day (reviewing diagnostic logs)... I sure the #### don't want to come home and look at the boob tube in the evening as well! My eyes are bad enough now....
I suggested it before, two types of subscriptions]

Yea...we're still trying to figure out how to price the back issues of the SCR that will be available on CDrom. We still have a few more months to go before all the work is done (via volunteer!), but we'll have some answers shortly.
I like the idea of making a back issue of the SCR available on CDrom only after it's been out for some period of time....like maybe 2 years.
[color=#000000]Prefer paper. I'm 46, wear bifocals. I sit in front of a computer most of the day at work and it causes great eye fatigue to constantly try to read off of a screen. The paper copy is tangible, personal and portable.
Would also like to comment in issue 56. Received it yesterday and have read most of it, will reread again no doubt. Excellent issue - I have a great interest in the Russian Navy and was really delighted by the coverage. I very much like the focus issues and hope the editors can keep this effort going. I'd like to see a focus issue on submarine paint schemes, particularly modern boats. I subscribe to the Naval Institute proceedings and the most recent issue (March 04, page 36) had a picture of a Delta IV in drydock - in color. Don't see that often.
The article on U505 was great also, I had been on the boat some 10 or so years ago. Once the move is completed will make an effort to go back and see her again.
I'd like to offer an observation ref the frequent lament about falling membership. I think it's probably a symptom of a couple of things]
I guess this is a bit of the topic but I agree with Thor, there are subs for just about anyone, easy to build subs, cheap subs.
And all in all you get what you pay for.
I have read a great pdf file on Tim Smalleys homepage, and Björn Lundberg has done an excellent job on converting it into Swedish, next year at the boat convension Im going to try and have my sub with and the papers
Paper. Printed. This computer fad is getting way out of hand!
All back issues/previous year on CD as previously suggested. The CD price should be fair for both seller and consumer.........
(How's that for a nebulous answer?)

I for one think all the SCRs should be put up in a members section on the committee. That way you can access them at any time. I don't want a CD rom, I will loose it.
If you want a paper version, why not push the print button.
>>> If you want a paper version, why not push the print button.
And therein lies the rub.
The SCR is essentially the intellectual capital of the SubCommittee. Making it virtually dead simple for anyone to print (or e-mail) a copy of the SCRs is of some concern.
There have been (good) suggestions around creating a block that would not allow printing, but so far they all appear to be easily defeated.
We will be making them available on CDrom....and when the SC member's section of the web site is ready some or all will be available there as well. Whether it's for a small download fee or not is yet to be determined.
Photocopier services and scanners are readily available to those who wish to distribute articles to non members.
Those who wish to do this, will do so, regardless of any measures put into place.
Perhaps a unique key on each individual copy of the report would help prevent unauthorised distribution (like an electronic water mark). At least that way the ID could be traced back to the culprit.
Photocopiers are slow and do not have the more-or-less instant reach that e-mail does. We are aware that some of our members 'share' their copies of the SCR and that this represents a loss to the organization....but right now it's not a real problem.
You are right.....using a unique key or password to unlock the file would help.

Keeping away all technical issues what I really like to have is pay-per-article downloading model. Could it be done the same way as Apple sells music tracks? Let's say 99c per article or something like this. And I will print downloaded article almost immediately. I hate to read from the monitor, unless I have no option.
When easy-to-get model could be deployed, why to be bothered with scans, OCR, e-mailing, etc..
Of course, e-mail .PDF files is only few seconds task. But does it make a big difference? My guess is NO.
