August 4, 2018 is close to our 36th wedding anniversary (August 7); and the 228 birthday of the U.S. Coast Guard. We plan to be there with our friends.

        Great!
And I might even have a running sub this year...

So, here's an odd question.... Is it kosher to enter a boat in the Captain's Choice contest that was not built by me? My initial thought would be probably not.

Well you won’t be killed and eaten, but...there is a fine line there.. if you buy a boat/sub and refurbish,
modify or finish it, it becomes yours. Therefore it is a valid entry.

Then the question becomes, if I commission someone to build a boat for me, is it eligible to enter the contest?

Example: I buy a car. Polish it up. Enter it in a car show.
              Is it not eligible?

Is the contest only for owner built boats or is it open to all who own a boat?

Well, it's not looking good for me then lol.... I did not build the sub, nor did I commission it. I'm talking about the 1/8 Alvin DSV that I bought from Bob Martin. He built it for another client who backed out, and I was able to grab it. Oh well....

Just to clear this up.. it is a r/c Sub Fun Run. No one is going to check that you are the
                  Builder of the Sub.

Let your conscience be your guide.
If you are comfortable with Entering a sub you did not build, refurbish, modify, finish, or just get sea worthy,
                  then enter it.
The goal is to have fun.

As it's a Fun Run.....perhaps simply ask/require entrants to identify the builder as well as the owner of the sub on the display placard. Then let the attendees decide which boat gets the Captain's Choice award....

If it were me, I'd require the boat to have been built by the person entering it. Otherwise, what's the point of collecting an award?

Display the boats with no names.
                      Just a number.

Judge the boat and not the builder or owner.
Call out the winner's number to learn who 's boat it is.
(how ever, we are such a small group, we recognize the boats and who it belongs to)
                      -----------------------
I buy a hull from (whoever), I assemble the parts.
Am I the builder or is the kit maker the builder?

Engel's makes complete kits. Only require assembly. Are they disqualified?
                      ----
Sound like the competition is to judge the builder (skills) and not necessarily the boat on display.
So would a builder that builds from scratch get more points than say a builder that uses a CNC machine to make all his parts and hull?

This is my last comment because, I can not make it to the event, so I should stay out of this conversation.
I will continue reading because I want to know how it turns out.

On a different subject. How soon do we get to reserve a hotel room. Don't want to sleep on the couch.
