I just watched a very interesting documentary on Smithsonian channel about the sinking of the US's PE-"Eagle"-56. The Navy's cause of sinking was listed as a boiler explosion. But the show presented some strong evidence that the U-583 was in the area, off the coat of Maine, on May 2, 1945, and perhaps had gone rogue after the call to U-Boats to cease all hostilities.
If it comes back around, it's a good watch.
