Excellent update! I've been (im)patiently waiting the release of this kit! It will go well with the 1/72nd Type VIIC and Gato kits.

That hull is definitely a quantum leap ahead in accuracy and quality from the test piece we saw a year ago. Time to start planning on building a fleet!

For me, there is no escape from having a fleet of Type IIs now... I like the D much better than the A, but who knows whether they will produce one, so the A is a must. Plus the D, when it comes out... and the Vesikko...
In fact, it is only ancient meditation techniques that have so far prevented me from purchasing the VIID set and starting my 3rd Type VII : ) All those U-boats in 1/72 are a year-long dream come true. So many models, so little time...

                  I also had been wondering

I also had been wondering if this kit was ever going to be released.

Looks like it really is going to be a reality after all, although at a somewhat steep price for such a small model. It makes their XXIII kit appear inexpensive..

With this Type IIA, you will get a hull that is about 22.5" long, 2.25" max. beam and somewhere between 2.1" to 2.75" draught.

All this can be yours for the pre-order price of $105.25 (retail price of $116.95). This makes it even more expensive than the Revell GATO.

If this company were to make a Type IX, it would probably cost over $200. Guess they make SMALL runs compared to Revell, but for a "limited" run kit as their XXIII has always been touted, there sure seem to be a lot of those XXIII kits availlable to purchase..maybe not many people bought them?

I have a Revell VIIC to get to (whenever I have the time and money to pour into it), so I'll just wait and see what the first buyers and reviewers of this IIA have to say about it.

Here is the IIA pre-order link for any interested people:

                    $100+ ?!? that's a steep price indeed.
I hope that it will be less expensive on this side of the pond, the EU should be good for something.

Their Type XXIII was around $70 US. So I'm not surprised that they're asking this for the Type II. Whether or not it's worth it is dependent on the quality and how badly you want a large Type II, I guess.

The Type IIA is finally out.
I found it here, if you want to take a look at sprue photos:

The price tag is quite stiff, IMO.
