Not really a movie, but a toss up between Nat Geo's original finding the Titanic (Alvin was my first taste) and SeaQuest DSV.

For me it's Hunt for Red October. I know that it's not 100% realistic but it captures some fantastic details given the time of production and has the Cold War vibe.

        Das Boot a close second.

Not imaginative choices I know, but they are THE obvious films for good reason

It has to be Das Boot!

Das Boot, in German w/English Sub-titles. Realism to the max!!!!!! Part of Officer SubScol curriculum for a while (if not still). All the others are trash by comparison. Hokey procedures,
cheesy set-pieces, and myriad other bad choices by the production companies have spoiled these things for me. U- 571- Bad. Red October- Bad. Ice Station Zebra- Worse. Gray Lady Down- Even Worserer. Crimson Tide- Just Flat Stupid!!! Guess my 22 years in boats made me a bit too critical!!

For me, it's a toss-up between Das Boot and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The first because of the gritty and accurate realism shown (especially in the uncut original German multi-part edition), the second because it was a very good representative of the full-length novel which is one of my favorites.

Das Boot, hands down! I still haven't built myself a Type VIIc (my favourite) although I've built three for other people... If I ever do, it will be Teddy Suhren's Driemel Katsen Boot...

                    Late entry........

All those mentioned, but the movie that inspired me to join the silent service and I consider the Submariner de facto standard........

                    "Ice Station Zebra"

Has it all, plot, effects (okay, maybe not the Soviet MIGS), realism. Very realistic w/regards to a modern nuke when it came to the orders and actions of those fictional submariners.
I'd say Das Boot has it on realism.

Though I'm a 3x Bluenose, I never made it under the ice

Fantastic Voyage has a role in my SCI-FI heart along with 20K

I liked "On the Beach", 1959, starring Gregory Peck. The earth is being consumed by nuclear radiation after WWIII, and the crew of the Sawfish, is among the last of the survivors, but not for much longer..

I am surprised that DESTINATION TOKYO wasn't even mentioned in this list, I think it is one of the all time best submarine flicks.
Well I guess I need to put this one on my list of sub movies to watch asap.

Disney 20K Leagues. I realize this is cliche, but like most of us it's what drew me to subs. As a 4 year old, I remember watching it for the first time glued to the screen. In retrospect, I was with my mom at someones house and they plopped me down in front of it and I've been obsessed with subs in general ever since. I think my obsession with the Nautilus has taken 2nd chair to my now favorite subs the 707 series subs so a close second would be Submarine707.
