    Re: Bronco Type XXIII build

I made a bulkhead master and mold today.
This way I only have to get it right once.
If you need more than one part of the same type and molding rubber it is the only way to go. BD.
    BD,

    Very, very nice work.

But please tell me, how did you determine the shape of the bulkhead? Trial and error? From a drawing?

    Keep posting those nice pictures.

      Re: Bronco Type XXIII build

      Sort of trial and error.
I started by tracing the inside of each 1/2 hull using the rear sections.
Which when traced side to side on thin cardboard I ended up with a slightly oversized section.
I keep a stash of cereal box cardboard which is great for pattern making.
I then trimmed this so it fit the best I could get it to the inside of the hull.
Then I transferred this to a Alumilite round I keep in different sizes for projects.
      (I mold them myself)
I cut out the shape using my scroll saw and sanded it to get the final fit.
      So basically trial and error.
I lucked out with the hull being split in four sections. BD.

        BD,

Thanks for your reply and explanation.

Looking forward to the rest of the build. Hope to see you and it at the Sub Regatta.

I also like the batteries low like that, what are you going to use and running at what voltage?
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

You can see the battery tube in the last photo.
It has two 123 cells inside.
The 123’s are rated for 3.3V giving me 6.6V. The water proof switch turns on the tube power.
I normally have a flood hole mounted under the switch which I can access with a small hook tool. BD.

              Dave,

Since you are making those bulkheads, i presume you are going to tackle the vertical split, it can be done, you know that.
It will be interesting to see which variation you will be designing.

              Manfred.

                    Re: Bronco Type XXIII build

                    Sorry, always the wise guy.
                    Seriously.
My bulkhead mold worked out great so I had to try out my driveline today.
I have a short video coming.
Everything was just sitting in the hull and the prop was to big but it works.
I also figured out how I will hold the hull half's together.
I will have some brass L brackets on the inside along the seam in two places and two flathead screws on the tail above and below the rudder.
No don't tell my friend Crazy Ivan I am using exposed external fasteners on the hull.
But if done the right way to make them inconspicuous you will not notice them.
I would rather do that than cut up a perfectly good hull to open it up.
The screw slots follow the weld lines and once painted the same color as the hull will be invisible.
I made some cool stanchions that are threaded and accept the flat head screws. BD.

Are you only going to use the stern planes?

                              Yes, I think so.
                              At least at first.
I do not like using bow planes.
On the subs I have that they do actually work I never use them.
Give me a good stern plane any day.
