Re: Just wondering Conning tower & Magnets

I've been using a pair of rare earth magnets in my 1/72nd scale Skipjack for connecting the sail plane linkage for over 10 years....no rust.

What I did was to put them in small pockets and glue a 0.010" thick piece of styrene sheet plastic over the top to seal it.

Hard to get rusty if it's never wet....

Yup! Plus I don't have to worry about one of the magnets getting loose.

Thanks Big Dave That diagram explains all
I think I will give that method a go
I think it will work well and I can remove the
coning tower to make repairs if needed

Maybe it´s a silly question, but why make your conning tower detachable in the first place?

                  Robert,
That is a great question. Some people don't. There are several reasons that come to mind, ease of removal and the other is limit damage. Ease of removal means no tools necessary to access what is below or to remove it to pack/store. As far as damage, it would give way or release prior to damage being done if it should get knocked. It can be compared to a shear pin, it is designed to break off so that more expensive damage can be prevented. I am sure there are other reasons, but those two come to mind. There are others here that may have a better description or another perspective.
                  Peace,
                  Tom
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

Re: Just wondering Conning tower & Magnets

                    Hi guys,

I will be using a similar setup with two pairs of 10mm rare-earth magnets holding down the conning tower. My question is, since I'm running the receiver antenna along the length of the WTC about 1.5 inches below the magnets, will they affect radio reception? Also, relative to the main drive motors, the magnets are about 6 inches away, will they also affect the motors' efficiency at this distance?

                    Regards,
                    Nate

P.S. The magnets are mounted with the North side facing up towards the deck.

                      No and no.

I've done both and there's no observable effect.
