Just wondering Conning tower & Magnets

So has anyone used the rare earth magnets to attach the sail to the body?
does it work? wont the force of the water knock it off?
I was just going to attach the sail to mu revell gato and was tryin g
to think of the best way to do it. so what do you think, I do not want
    to loose it
    let me know your ideas
    thanks

    I do!

I've got a Trumpeter KILO and that's how my sail is attached - using two 1/8" x 1/8" neodymium magnets, one in the sail and one on top of the hull. It works great, although I still have the sail tied on to the boat with a safety lanyard. This setup is a great defense against the occasional mishap - in the event of a collision the sail comes off easily and I just drive back towing it along side the hull.

that mite be OK for a newer class sub sail but how would a revell gato fair?
Has yours come off yet? I want it to kinda stay on, unless a accident happens
the gato has a bit more girth than just the sail on a nuk boat, and I dont want it
to just come off by the movement of the model under water mite be too much
strain on the structure. I may have to just screw it to the deck
      still wondering/thinking

I have the c/t of my 1/48 Type XXI attached to the deck with 4 magnets,2 pulling against each other in the front and 2 more in the rear of the c/t.Works very good for me,you have to pull hard to get the c/t loose.

          Jack,
I am building the Revell Gato and mine will be held in by magnets. A good source for magnets is http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/. I like them because of the variety of sizes. I currently have a ton (give or take a couple thousand pounds) of rare earth magnets that I get out of Apple laptop parts we discard. If you would like a few, pm me, I will be glad to send you some.
          Peace,
          tom
If you can cut, drill, saw, hit things and swear a lot, you're well on the way to building a working model sub.

The last one that I built used magnets and they work just fine. These boats are not speed boats. If you use the right ones in the right places you won't have any issues.

Ya nice boat Hard to believe that is a revell
I want to thank everyone for the replys
it seems that if one were to use 4 sets of magnets, 4 in front and 4 in back
that the bond of the two magnets together x the 4 spots is quite strong
so it looks like just the right deal! Now how did you bond them to the surfaces?
                I was thinking JB Weld?
                Thanks

Hey Bob... You are the guy who ended up with my 1/96 sturgeon
You did a great job finishing it up! How is the old girl? Do you still have it?
that was a nice boat, I should have kept it it was the perfect size
anyways How long to build your gato? Got any inside photos?
How did you do your front dive planes? That is the part I am
up to now, and I have this great internal strugle goin on as to
make them retractable or not. What do you think are the advantages
to both fixed (just pitch) & pitch & Retractable?

...hmmmm, I'm thinking that we shoudl ask Bob to write up his build details for an articel for the eSCR! How about, Bob? Can we entice you to do it?

The photo of your boat is destined for the cover of the eSCR!

I have not had good luck with magnets.
It is not that they don't hold but they rust.
Even coated to protect them they seem to rust.
I use very small rubber bands to hold my sail on.
One wire hook on the sail and one on the hull.
It's what ever works best for you. BD.

I like the rubber band Idea
                        Got any Pixs?
I'm thinkin a hook on the sail and one on the bottom of the
deck, maybe one on each end...

Unfortunately this was one of the rare instances where I didn't document my build. In this case, the boat was given to me to finish and had been started (and very nicely, too!) by the former owner. I basically got all the running gear in there, set up the WTC and trimmed it out.

She was a bit slow so I recommended we bump up the voltage to 9.6V and that did the trick nicely.

The rust on the magnets may come from metal filings captured by the magnets field.

There is normally a nickel plating around the magnets because the formula used to make rare earth magnets like Sintered Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) contain (as the name implied, iron) and iron will rust. So even a plated one can rust if the coating cracks (heat expansion, chipping from two magnets snapping together or being dropped, etc.). Once it is epoxied in or fastened by your favorite method, coat it with Plasti Dip or some form of waterproofer (even a good paint), but in time some rust may happen.....so you can live with it or obsess over it or ????
