Re: OTW's new R-10 Class WW1 sub kit

I would think the wood used for the plug is either Basswood or Jelutong, or possibly a combination, both were commonly used by pattern makers although i think polyurethane tooling boards seem to be taking over these days.

Steve Warner told me they used to use furan resin to coat the plug, as it scribes nicely. I think that's difficult to obtain now as it's got a lot of nasty stuff in it, so perhaps they've switched to a polyurethane clearcoat system or similar.

        Steve,

I have used Jelutong in the past for patterns. It is wonderful wood to work with and is surprisingly stable. But it is VERY expensive stuff and it is really hard to find in large blanks.

        Keep up the great work!

          Andy,

No need to speculate on the wood. Bob told Steve that he uses Jelutong....as we saw in Steve's video.

Glad I'm not the only one keeping up with Steve's "SNG" videos—aren't they fun? Keep up the great work, Steve, and we'll keep watching...!

SNG is the ONLY reality based show I will watch. It has a lot of value and it just a lot of fun to watch. It beats the hell out of watching the Kardashians and other worthless trash like that on TV. Keep it up, Steve!

as a bird carver, I use tupelo for most of my stuff these days. It sands better than basswood, and for the detail I put on my carvings, it's perfect. I know of several professional carvers that used jelutong...but it is pricey.

Ah okay. I missed the bit at the start of the second film about the R-class. That's what happens when you fast forward past the trekkie stuff.

Used jelutong in woodwork at school. Easy wood to work, a bit like soft/medium pine in terms of effort required to work, but less prone to splitting.

What's wrong with Trekkie stuff?? I mean all this technology and space travel came as a result and influence of Trekkie stuff.

Besides the show teaches you sculpting and mold making all applicable to any thing we do here. Just a thought.

                      Thanks guys.

I love the Trekkie stuff, Steve! Keep it up. It provides a view into the many different methods of molding. layups, etc..

I was going to ask it the Spock busts are rotationally molded to get them hollow?

                          ...that's "Trekker" not "Trekkie"....

A Trekker is the type of fan that "uses" the technology described in the series & movies. Trekkies are those guys who wear Vulcan ears.

                          So Steve, which are you?
