I would think the wood used for the plug is either Basswood or Jelutong, or possibly a combination, both were commonly used by pattern makers although i think polyurethane tooling boards seem to be taking over these days.
Steve Warner told me they used to use furan resin to coat the plug, as it scribes nicely. I think that's difficult to obtain now as it's got a lot of nasty stuff in it, so perhaps they've switched to a polyurethane clearcoat system or similar.
