    Re: New Engel 212 build.

    The magnets!!
The magnets were in fact giving me gas!!
The instructions say in theory the more you have the better the resolution will be for control.
But some setups only require two, some 4, and some 6.
It depends on how big your gear is you are mounting to.
If the gear is to small you can get overlapping magnetic fields and it will mess up the hall sensor.
I tried 4 at first and it did not seem to work well.
It was also hard (at least for me) to get the N and S correct on a cube magnet.
You have to stagger them NSNS on the gear.
It was hard with the different sized magnets to get the polarity correct.
They give you two small and two larger magnets.
The two seem to give me as much precise control as I need for my set up. BD.

      Re: New Engel 212 build.

      Dan,
Me thinks you are confusing theory mumbo-jumbo with model sub real world operation.
In theory you are correct. But even though the model is moving up or down at times it will appear to be at a set point and hovering.
I know it is not actually hovering and is in real life decending at a slow rate, but it seems like a hover.
I think you are trying to read more into it than it is.
As they say(who ever they are)it is what is is.
It is just a proportional controlled piston tank.
You are still controlling the depth with "guestimation". It just makes it a little easier. BD.
      BD,

      Okey -Dokey.

I'm looking forward to seeing the 212 , you and the rest of the 8-Balls at the Regatta.

        re: Dial-a-Depth (tm)

Static hovering with the entire sub below the surface of the water is very, very difficult and depends heavily on the water conditions (temperature, specific gravity). When BD and I refer to dialing a given depth, we are almost always in a state of forward motion, however slight. That said, I am almost always successful in dialing a depth where only the top-most tip of the periscope is out of the water.

        re: number of magnets

The unit I have uses 2 magnets and given the pitch of the piston jackscrew, that yields a more than sufficient level of control over the piston. I suspect that the issue with using 4 magnets may be that they are too close together for the distance that the Hall effect sensor is from them......as in it may be a case of interference. If the Engel unit allows the use of only 2 magnets, then that's good to know.

I ran mine for the first time on Sunday. It ran perfect without anyfurther trim changes. And your right, only tiny deflections on the X tails needed to make this boats dance! I made one cut out on the turtle at the back and had no issues with trapped air, nice level dive too.

                Very nice Ramesh!!
                She is trimmed out nice!!
Are you running a APC of any kind?
The 212's do handle like a sports car!! BD.

                  Re: New Engel 212 build.

Thansk, she's fitted with the Engel dual pitch controller, but I am not sure how much it does as I had to turn down the sensitivity a lot to stop the plane carriers hitting the propshaft/stops when under APC control (when the boat was tilted at extreme angles) Dialing down the throw on the TX only limited servo movement when under Tx overide. I was pleasently surprised with how well it ran after simple trimming in the bath.

                      Re: New Engel 212 build.

That is the problem with running a APC in a boat where you use the T/X end point adjustments.
No matter what the radio is set at the APC will give the servo what it wants.
This can lead to stripped gears, bent linkages, burned out electronics.
I wish someone would design a APC with end point adjustments.
Now that would be a useful gizmo!! BD.

                        Re: New Engel 212 build.

The analogue levellers from Germany allow you to set endpoints manually (using two trim pots).

In regard to the amount of magnets, on an engel tank two magnets should give you accuracy to within about a tenth of an ounce- surely that's got to be accurate enough for anyone?!

I've also been informed that the microgyros microcontroller based leveller has adjustable end points for the servo. So there is one available!

I tried the new proportional control board Sunday at our fun run and it worked great.
                              The Dial-a-depth worked great too.
I did not have any glitching either.
I still have a little trapped air under the turtledeck but a few well placed vents will solve that problem.
I even painted the scopes!! BD.
