    Hunley 1/8

    Hi everybody !
Its a long time since I posted here
After my first sub, I began the construction of the Hunley in May 2009.
90% Scratch building, external hull in zinc, accessories in copper and brass, waterproof hull in epoxy resin and fiberglass.
The model is is almost finished by now. The maiden "see trial" have been succesfully done last week end during a Submarine Regatta which held in an indoor pool.
If it is of some interest to you, I will relate the construction and the trials of this model which is 159cm long (5,21Feet)

Fantastic! Michael will be pleased you put his plans to good use.

I'll be interested to hear how your model handles underwater. I have always had a pitching problem when I ran my Hunley, chalking it up to the boat's bow planes only control. Also, if you take too steep of a dive, the bow planes can't compensate.

          Hi Tim!
I knew your model since a long time.
I have a website where I present my works on subs and other models (wooden toys for my grandchildren), on this website Ihave a special page for links :

If you scroll down, you'll find your website
About your question for underwater sailing...
This model is really very new, even not yet finished, and I only used it once last week end. I have not a big experience of navigation with it.
It's fitted with an automatic horizontal control which seems to be efficient when the speed is more than 1/2 on the "throttle"
There is a small trick in order to get the bow planes more efficient : The battery pack is fitted on a mobile rack, when the bow planes are going to dive, the rack goes ahead ( +/- 2,5cm = 1"), when the bow planes are going up, the rack is going backwards. It really helps for a good control but you need to have a good speed.

My model is a little bit bigger than Tim's one, but I do not think the gap big enough to be so efficient.
It might be the fact to have the batteries fixed in a motorized rack witch helps the bow planes work.

Here is a little improvement :
"Schnorkell" motorisation : Small video of the motion :
                          http://www.sousmarin.kart-thiais.com/im ... ll1022.AVI
Adjustments are still necessary, but the main thing seems to be good.

Notice : Video is a bit long to load

It is an ".avi" file it takes 1 or 2 minutes to load for me, but some friends of mine told me they had some problems to wiew it .
I'll put it on youtube soon and let you know the link
