How will this pinger system

How will this pinger system work? Wouldn't one need a computer and 3 hydrophones to precisely locate where the pinging sound is coming from?

You could manually triangulate using just one hydrophone. Turn the hydrophone left and right til you get the loudest return then note it's bearing. Then move to other location preferrably at a right angle to the first and repeat the scan. Where the bearings intersect is the likely location of the pinger.

I'm pretty sure that you can't get differential readings underwater based on orientation. Water propagates sound too well. You'd need to triangulate based on volume from three or more points.

Place your cell phone

Pinger Experiment.
Place your cell phone in a water proof peanut butter jar and weight it down to set
on the bottom of a swimming pool.
Call the phone and see if it rings.
Will the frequency of the phone signal penetrate the water?
If it rings could you have it make enough noise to locate it?

Now to answer your question did I try it. No, I just think up these silly ideas.

You ever see those traffic flow indicators on the web or news channels.
I believe they tell whether traffic is moving fast or slow by the triangulation
of cell phones trying to find the transmission tower with the strongest signal.
(one of the reasons your cell phone battery drains is its always look for the strongest signal)
Could that same idea work for a sub that has a transmitter on board to find its position.
Transmitte a sos from the sub and search for the strongest signal from different locations along the shore and find where
they all meet.

I feel fortunate that I can run my subs in the open waters, which are crystal clear here in my neck of the woods. If I had one go down, and I did already, its very visible.

People used to use a float attached to the boat with fishing line. The float was held in position with soap. So after a day or two the soap melts underwater and the float pops to the surface.
