This is the duel of the Pump Jets.
It is a long awaited confrontation between the Mighty PPJ and the new contender the BTP.
My good friend George (Crazy Ivan) Protchenko designed and built a prototype Pump Jet for model use a while back and I molded it up for him.
CI graciously allowed me to use it in my version of the Moebius Seaview. It is a great unit and works really well.
Not wanting to be one-upped by Mr. Ivan
I decided to try and make my own version.
I wanted something I could use in possible new kits that was efficient and easy for me to make.
I finished my prototype yesterday and tested it against CI’s creation.
So friends I give you the battle of the PJ’s!!
In the challengers corner weighing in at 27.5 grams I give you the BTP. (Bigdave Thrust Pump) Cue applause!!
In the Champions corner weighing in at a svelte 26.7 grams I give you the Mighty PPJ.
(Protchenko Pump Jet) Cue boo’s I mean applause!! Ha!!
I used the same test fixture to test both units so the only difference would be in the current draw and thrust output.
Testing the PPJ first the champ pulled a 2.7 amp reading with great thrust. (Well done CI)
The crowd jumped to their feet and roared with excitement!!!
Now it was the BTP’s turn. I was shaking in my boots!! What had I gotten myself into!!
I advanced the throttle stick to full and checked the watt meter. It was reading 2.5 amps with what seemed like slightly less thrust.
Well it was over!! The PPJ had dealt me a staggering blow and I was out like a light!!
After I regained conciseness I decided that losing to the champ was not a bad thing. I had come close to producing the same amount of thrust output with an easier for me to build unit.
I would have been very surprised if I had won as CI’s design is like an actual full size PJ and mine is more like a ducted thruster.
Obviously this story was only presented for its entertainment value, and no animals were hurt during its production. Although the water was a bit cold in the laundry tub and my fingers nearly froze. Ha!!
I have to concede to the Champ PPJ, and I say to my friend Crazy Ivan.
I’m not worthy!! I’m not worthy!!
BD.
Thy PPJ is on the right and the BTP on the left.
