PPJ VS BTP A funny story!

This is the duel of the Pump Jets.
It is a long awaited confrontation between the Mighty PPJ and the new contender the BTP.
My good friend George (Crazy Ivan) Protchenko designed and built a prototype Pump Jet for model use a while back and I molded it up for him.
CI graciously allowed me to use it in my version of the Moebius Seaview. It is a great unit and works really well.
Not wanting to be one-upped by Mr. Ivan I decided to try and make my own version.
I wanted something I could use in possible new kits that was efficient and easy for me to make.
I finished my prototype yesterday and tested it against CI’s creation.
So friends I give you the battle of the PJ’s!!
In the challengers corner weighing in at 27.5 grams I give you the BTP. (Bigdave Thrust Pump) Cue applause!!
In the Champions corner weighing in at a svelte 26.7 grams I give you the Mighty PPJ.
(Protchenko Pump Jet) Cue boo’s I mean applause!! Ha!!

I used the same test fixture to test both units so the only difference would be in the current draw and thrust output.

Testing the PPJ first the champ pulled a 2.7 amp reading with great thrust. (Well done CI)
The crowd jumped to their feet and roared with excitement!!!
Now it was the BTP’s turn. I was shaking in my boots!! What had I gotten myself into!!
I advanced the throttle stick to full and checked the watt meter. It was reading 2.5 amps with what seemed like slightly less thrust.
Well it was over!! The PPJ had dealt me a staggering blow and I was out like a light!!
After I regained conciseness I decided that losing to the champ was not a bad thing. I had come close to producing the same amount of thrust output with an easier for me to build unit.
I would have been very surprised if I had won as CI’s design is like an actual full size PJ and mine is more like a ducted thruster.
Obviously this story was only presented for its entertainment value, and no animals were hurt during its production. Although the water was a bit cold in the laundry tub and my fingers nearly froze. Ha!!
I have to concede to the Champ PPJ, and I say to my friend Crazy Ivan.
I’m not worthy!! I’m not worthy!! BD.
Thy PPJ is on the right and the BTP on the left.

    I am one of those

I am one of those people who would "die" to have a CI PPJ in a Seaview.
I will happily not have to "die" to get a Big Dave BTP.
Some where, someone named Crazy Ivan smiles.
Can a man have all three?
CI PPJ, BD BTP, DM D&E
    (OMG talking SubCom Code)

    Only CI knows for sure....

        In reality. the PPJ entered

In reality. the PPJ entered the competition with one hand tied behind its back. The one-two punch is delivered when the PPJ is coupled to the AMTD (Almighty Magic Thrust Divider). Only then is the full potential realized, and in all the universe there is but one. Let the games begin.....

            Thrust measuring rig

Would be nice if you have some sort of a rig to measure how much thrust each one is actually producing.

The simplest way would be to let the PJ push against a plate attached to a lever arm that moves across a scale.

In the words of the estimable Duke, "Smile when you say that, mister."

Ok, time for some straight talk here. Really, it's not my call. I personally don't have the time, the experience or the inclination to get into the casting business. My design was never intended to be a viable commercial product. When BD kindly offered to create a mold for my jet, I gladly agreed so that we could do a limited run, and do some experimenting with the jet. I can't speak for Dave, but I believe this run of parts proved my design to be somewhat difficult to cast. Hence Dave's desire to simplify it to a more production friendly design. He seems to have come very close in his first try. Your enthusiasm is appreciated, but I would recommend that we give BD an opportunity to refine his design, and I'm sure that he will, in typical BD fashion, come up with a product that fits the bill in all respects. 'Nuff said.

                  Welcome aboard, Dean! I've seen

Welcome aboard, Dean! I've seen your posts around the various modeling forums lately. It's good to see someone as eager as you are to "dive" into the hobby with both feet as it were. That kind of excitement can be contagious to other lurkers out there. As for me, I guess I do have some notoriety, though I wouldn't call myself a "master". A number of others deserve that accolade more than I do. I'm just a guy who enjoys tinkering with new ideas and taking the road less traveled. Sometimes that draws a bit of attention.

I think you will be happy with Dave Merriman's Seaview conversion. A lot of thought went into it, and it's done by a true professional. If my good buddy BD gets around to kitting up a system, you will like that too, and get a whole different perspective on how to approach things. One boat of any kind is generally enough for me though, then its off to something new.

I understand you live just down river (maybe a mere 100 miles or so?) from Gananoque. Maybe we will meet up at one of Ben's Cottage Regattas some day. I have a summer place outside Cape Vincent and I have been to his last two gatherings. Its a real collection of a lot of great talent.

Be sure to post your build, and we look forward to seeing your progress.

                    Ben has already invited me.

Mr Merriman has set me straight on my "ideas" after some web searches.
I was asking some newbie questions, that he was kind enough to teach me was wasted thought.

I look forward to bringing my completed Seaview to Ben's place and too meeting all the guys in person.

I will post my build. I need another month to buy the conversion kit.
With the way the dollar is going, I hope some currency conversion in my benefit....

PS oddly enough, there was show today on History Channel about your name sake....Syncronicity.
