For a propultion motor from

For a propultion motor from what I can see your sub is quite streamlined with a small cross section.
With a 3.5 inch prop I would sugest the standard setup I use for subs of this size.

A 12 Volt RS -550 HS type motor are very effecient and very powerfull and run cool.

Just instal this gear box a double ballbearing nylon gear and brass pinion sealed gear box unit by MasterAirscrew and the ratio is 3.5.Have never had to replace one yet all these years.

You will find with this combination that plenty of power and very slow prop speed is obtained without high amprage use.My subs nurmaly run for 2 to 3 hours continuesely with this motor/grearbox and similar prop,even turning a waterpump though not realy necesary.I like to watercool the drive motors.
remove the setscrew on the prop adapter and a 3/16 shaft is there.I then install a MILL spec U joint of stainless steel,Ill sell you one if you like.Or just use a different one.

You can perchase every part of the gear box fom the manufafturer and great prices.
Get the motor on Ebay or surplus for around 5 bucks
Ill get that list of parts for the ballast system for you soon .

For motors you may want

For motors you may want to check out the Integy lathe motors.
Tower sells them. They are very high turn 550 size motors sold to run model motor lathes. I got this tip from Darrin H. He says you can run props this size direct drive easily. Very high torque. BD.

I looked up those motors. They are listed as 45T, 55T, 65T, 75T, and 85T. Are these the ones you're suggesting here? And which is the 550?

Do you know what the differences between the numbers are?

Will it run on 12V too?

I am not sure on the voltage. It may say on the home web site for the motors.
They are all 550 motors in size.
The difference is the speed and torque.
The higher the number the slower the motor will spin but the higher the torque will be. The 85T (85 turn) motor will spin the slowest. The 45T will spin the fastest. Darrin said the 55T was equivalent to a Dumas Pitman. I have not tried them but he is very impressed. BD.

Ok I went to the

Ok I went to the source on this one and talked to the guys at integy about the motors.

-these are 540 size motors

-the official spec is 7.2V/8.4V ... but I know people are using 12V with them.

-so if you are running 540 size 27T. The 55T will run much slower, maybe several times slower but with several times but torque.

-I think 85T will be twice as slow as 55T

-6100RPM for the 55 on 6 volts

So this means to me that an 85t with 12 volts will yield ~6100rpm w/ less current.

Only question now is will 6100prm be good enough to make this boat move along with the given pitch of the prop.

Oh I also cut out my missile hatch doors today and started depening the scribe lines around the other hatches. I am doing that because they are all supposed to be separate from the turtle back so I want to try and enhance this look with the others so that the two working hatches dont stand out.

Also nuke power check out the mini hydraulics for yor doors,very compact system that will actuate as many doors as you like with stunning realism!

Over 6k sounds too high

Over 6k sounds too high to me.

My motor cranks around at 2500RPM, and about 1700 RPM under load, with the prop in a bucket.

I'd be aiming for an unloaded speed of a similar figure for your Ohio.

Not sure I want to go with hydraulics because I want to keep it as simple as possible as far as mechanisms. Not to mention the real door opens in about 1 sec.

Andy do you mean it is 2 slow. I believe the 6k is an unloaded rating. I will probably try out the two extremes of the motors I.E. the 55t and 85t. I just can see buying 100 bux in motors just to use one. There is also another motor a friend has that i will be trying out.

Started work on the missile

Started work on the missile hatch door mechanisms and detail. Of course I need to get my lathe to finish them off by making the breach seals. Still need to do some filling and other little details on them but its off and running.
I also made them held in by a pin so that removal is a snap!

1. What kind of glue are you using?
2. How far "back" do the missile doors swing? All the way back like a flower petal or only as far back as to keep the doors at a 90 degree angle with the hull deck...or somewhere in between?
