    Revell 1/144 U-214

Well I started another project to help occupy my time. This time its a small scale sub the U-214.
This thing is pretty small but I have seen people do small subs before and any thing is possible.

The planes that come with the boat and I am not sure just how well this thing is going to handle but time will tell. The upper rudder on the other hand is nice an large and it should turn very nicely once submerged. Just need to figure out how to get the linkages together. I do not think that I am going to take the time to engineer the planes for easy of maintenance like I usually do. Rather I am just going to make the setup as reliable as possible and hope it lasts. After all it is only a 24 dollar boat.

The provided propeller isn't bad. The pitch isnt to big which will probably be good for the small motor it will use. I heard a good rule of thumb is to use a motor can the same Dia as your prop and you cant go wrong. Unfortunately this is not possible due to size. The prop would be a little more efficient if it had be molded with a conical twist but, I not gonna make a new one so it will have to do. Another neat thing is that the prop already has a 1/8" hole in the back and a shaft will pop right on centered.

Well here are some pics and a video of some testing i did with the prop.

The test was done using a cermark 400 motor w/ a 3-1 reduction. Sorry the quality sucks but the wife has the good camera.

    Nuke,

    I couldn't help but notice

    Nuke,

I couldn't help but notice the "rule of thumb" you stated about the size of the prop versus the size of the motor can....

my Alvin has a prop that is 5.5" in diameter....

          Hi redboat. Just a note

Hi redboat. Just a note when you copy and paste a SC forum link. You cant copy the header because it will send you right back to the main forum. YOu have to copy the hyper link to the subject you want to get the right link.

As for the WTC. Yes I will be using one of the 1.5" sub drivers. My goal is to see how many boats I can get this thing into. So, far I have a u-214, u-212, type 21. Ill be trying more as I get them!

            Got the linkages made up.

Got the linkages made up. The diver planes are nice because they are actually right above the shaft. As for the rudder. This is a major tight fit. I went through a lot of different combos but couldnt find anything that would give the rudder any swing, which is important with such a small lower rudder. I ended up currting a hole in the side to allow the thing to swing all the way. If I think of something else Ill just patch the hole with ever coat. It will be easy cause I am doing all the mock up with the 2 halves not glued together.

I am using a 400 size brushless outrunner that runs at 740 rpm per volt, attached to a 6:1 gearbox

Hey Kevin, I thought that boat had an X-tail. Are there variants?

Looks like fun though. Once I get you your Ohio, you can use that thing for a SDV.

                    Tim: The rule of thumb

Tim: The rule of thumb I stated only applies to direct drive.

Pete: I could probably fire the thing off as a torpedo to be honest. There are different variants, the one you are refering to is the u 212 which is also in the mail.

Hey Kevin spill! What are the dimensions on that new 1.5 WTC. If it fits a 17.3 inch U-214 it might work on a pocket sub project that I have on my shelf...

                      Cheers,
                      Doug

No idea Doug. I am crossing my fingers that it fits in my sub. You arent by chance talking about your yamato are you. If so... it would be sweet to see that thing hit the water.

Oh and never yell spill if no one else is around geezzz.

                            According to Caswell's slide show,

According to Caswell's slide show, the new 1.5 snorkel Sub-Driver should fit - I think it's about 10-11 inches long.
