    Yes, this is true. But

Yes, this is true. But we are talking about weight out of the water, not in the water. The mass has to be in the water to displace water. If the mass is out of the water it is just weight pushing down on the hull trying to sink it. Hugh Hugh!! As Monty Python said, "See, I run rings around you logicly" BD.

Ahh...but the weight out of the water is already being supported by the boat/sub that's floating. In other words, the weight is already factored out.

          OK Boys!!
          Then think of this.

          OK Boys!!
          Then think of this.
Given you have a set amount of lift (air). This is a non-changing factor.
Would you not want to make what you are lifting as light as possible?
I am sure you are right in your density in water theories, but if you factor in a set amount of lift anything heaver will push down until it reaches the water. My bottom line is anything heavier on the deck will take more air to lift it. Till it reaches the water. BD.

              OK then, look at it

OK then, look at it this way. Say you have a boat floating on the surface, and there are 5 pounds of lead in the bottom, below the waterline. Now take one pound of that lead and move it up on the deck, above the waterline. Does the boat sink further down then? NO! Try it yourself. All you did was make the boat less stable. The waterline will always be where the weight of the displaced water equals the TOTAL weight of the boat, not just the part above the water. You can't separate the two. Now don't make me come over there and give you a physics lesson.

                BD,

                No......if you add weight to

                BD,

No......if you add weight to the deck (for example), you would add foam below the waterline in order to trim the boat back to the proper waterline. Yes?

By doing that you have countered that weight entirely.

Now, what happens when you then wish to submerge the boat? As the deck (and conning tower, etc.) enter the water what changes? Not the weight, but you are now displacing more water. It's the weight of that displaced water that the ballast system needs to offset if you want to submerge.

                -Jeff

p.s. CI, we can give BD the physics lesson this Saturday, eh?

                  What about the difference between

What about the difference between a given weight in and out of the water. Anything lifted out of the water will inherently be heaver than when in the water because you have removed the buoyancy factor. Correct?

                    BD,

                    Ahhh...but now what you are

                    BD,

Ahhh...but now what you are describing is the effect of two opposing forces and what is known as the "apparent immersed weight". Key word here is "apparent".

Excellent idea, Jeff! And I will spend the 6+ hours Friday to see if I can make BD a bit more receptive to it. Til then....

                        CI,

                        What time will you be

                        CI,

What time will you be arriving? I think I'll be there around 4:00pm.

Where will you be staying? I'll be at the Best Western Olympic. Want to plan a time/place for dinner?
