    Glenn Cauley's U-673 build (1:72)

    Hello all,

For my current U-673 project, I decided to bite the bullet and create a mock-up of the inner pressure hull instead of getting the resin set by Yankee Modelworks. This is so that the (hopefully) proper curvature will appear behind the opened flooding/drainage holes in the hull. There are several sources (books, websites, etc.) that show the components & structures that are affixed outside the inner pressure hull (for example, external torpedo storage tubes, air/exhaust piping, etc.)

My inspiration for mocking up my own inner pressure hull came from Daniel Jayne's FSM article "Inside the Wolfpack" and Wink Grisé's site.

Using a few books as resources (primarily "Anatomy of the Ship]U-625 build[/url], I have started to post a website to document my build of U-673... and building the inner pressure hull will certainly be a chapter on that site.

If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to send me an e-mail.

    Cheers!

    U-673 site is up

For anyone interested, I have created a "work in progress" website about my 1:72 static U-673 project at:

I have included a chapter about building a mock-up of the inner pressure hull, complete with plans & instructions.

    Cheers!

          U-673: Back At It !!!

          November 25, 2007
With my motorcycle put to bed for the season, and my boathouse closed too, it's time to turn to my winter hobby again... modelling!

My model of U-625 has been doing well at the hobby contests... typically winning the Submarine categories and a few "Best Ship" awards. But at the last show (Ajax 2007) it won "Best of Show - People's Choice"

I am now back to work on my U-673 project, and have updated the U-673 website accordingly. At this stage I'm covered in plastic shavings and wearing my Darth Vader breathmask so as not to inhale all the sanded putty dust.

            U-673: Back At It!!!

            December 17, 2007
With all the snow this weekend (37cm) it made for a good reason to stay indoors and work on my model!

Since I've not added a lot of new sections to my website, it may seem like I've not made a lot of progress. BUT... nothing could be further from the truth.

For my model of U-673, I'm spending A LOT of time working on the surface of the outer hull. What is taking up most of my time these days is the additional weld beads and 'oil canning' effects. Lots of scraping & sanding, etc... and I have the cuts on my fingers to prove it!!!

Take a look at my site here and go to the "Hull Detailing" section.

Again, if anyone has any comments or questions, I'm happy to get your feedback and help anyone out.

Best regards, and Merry Christmas to everyone!

In the process of detailing the hull of U-673, I came up with a very quick & easy technique and tool to create fairly realistic looking weld beads.

              Have a look HERE.

This should work in almost any scale on any model.

                the tool

                nifty trick, Glenn !

the tool is not rotated, right ? it just serves as a grip on the nail ?

That's right... it is just a regular micro drill handle... it holds it firm and does not rotate.

                    U-673: Update: Dec 26, 2007

                    December 26, 2007
You gotta love Boxing Day for something... one day where no stores are open... so another prime time for modelling!

I hit an unofficial milestone today... and was jumping with glee at around 7PM!
On the starboard half of the hull, I finally finished ALL the texturing... all of the hull rippling is done... ALL of the weld beads are textured... all drip channels have been added fore & aft... and most of the major reconstruction is finished.

Before I can actually JOIN the two hull halves, the following tasks remain:

                    Tasks for starboard hull:
                    * cut out the central drainage channel
                    * add internal saddletank ribbing

                    Tasks for port hull:
                    * hull rippling of the saddletanks and pressure hull areas (major)
                    * addition of new weld beads
                    * texturing of all weld beads

I updated my U-673 site with newer pictures, and more detail in the Hull Detailing section (particularly dealing with oil canning, welds, and drip channels).

                    Happy New Year to everyone!

                      U-673 -- Back at it in 2008!

It must be post-motorcycling season... cause I'm back at the modelling again!

The U-673 project has been resurrected for the winter season... although with a mending collarbone (souvenier of my last motorcycle race ) the workbench sessions are short.

The deck is now on the boat... check it out.
