Have you thought about making the fins from RTV rubber with embedded carbon fibre rods, like the crude paintbrush drawing below?

They should give way in an incident, but remain stiff enough to effect control of the boat (mammal?)

Actually I want

Hi Andy,
Actually I want them to break in an accident like that. They are made out of a material I got from Tim called Sintra. It is strong but very flexible. You can bend them quite a bit and they will come back to shape. In the case of this crash though they were not bent they were sheered off. I think if they had been stronger it may have broken the hull at the exit point. The flippers, and flukes I can replace. But thanks for the idea. BD.
