Here is the periscope system I am experimenting with. It is hydraulic.
As a diabetic, I have painfull access to small syringes. I found they work as perfect little hydraulic cylinders using water as the fluid and a little glo-fuel gear pump as the hydraulic pump.
The whole system can be mounted inside of the WTC with the pump taking a suction "from the sea" and discharging to the syringe (less needle). When the scope is fuly extended, the pump just dead heads - no limit switches. The scope is lowered by reversing the pump and a very light spring that was stretched when the scope extended.

Thats a neat idea. I was thinking awhile back about functional scopes for my fleet boat, when I get that far, and was curious how water would work. Lets face it the boat would have an endless supply and you would'nt have to worry about someone having a fit about putting oil in the water!

I have tried your method and had it working at the Merstham show, here in the UK. It works very nicely. Hydraulics is much more rugged than electrical connections etc.
I used a 10ml syringe driven by a servo inside the WTC. The scope rests on a 4mm diameter floating PTFE piston in a brass tube.
I intend to write an article for our AMS magazine in the UK and I will give you all due credit for your idea.

I should have explained that the servo is in the WTC and the piping just goes through a bulkhead connection. I tried waterproofing servos as per threads in this forum but I was not happy with the results. (Unkind to servos!)
I Dremelled a slot in the ply and put the "finger" tab of the syringe in this. Then tie wrapped it to the ply base.
Improvements?? A smaller syringe(2ml perhaps) and a smaller servo would give more space in the WTC.
