I'm glad you did the test - it will have saved you a lot of grief later on. I hope the kitchen didn't get too wet

The next design puzzle is fiitting 2 motors with gearboxes into the circle of your WTC.

Alternatively you can use Andy's idea and try two multi pole motors with direct drive. Buhlers are lovely but don't have much torque for friction from seals etc. Suggest you do contact Model Motors Direct (Alistair) for some ideas as Andy suggests.

Don't forget you can use inline planetary/pile style gearboxes if you're tight for space.

These are more expensive than the other options mentioned, and are also less efficient (more gears= more friction).

Not too sure if they're available for speed 400 size motors. Certainly available for Speed 500's, so you could make an adapter plate if it came to that.

        Boy I didn't realise it

Boy I didn't realise it was going to be quite this difficult!

Subtech have just the setup for this size, motor/belt drive gears - but they are £22 each! I will try to find just gears before I shell out £44 for running gear.

Dave, thats an impressive selection of sub bits!! I'd hate to throw away all that I have bought so farthough, so I guess I will struggle on and try to make it all work together.. If I were starting again from scratch I might be tempted to just spend the money and buy a complete WTC setup.

                  Q. Do you sell your product through Subtech? (We have Subtech over here in UK)

The stuffing box should be set into the end cap with the drive shaft protruding past the stuffing box into the wtc there the dog bone couples the motor too the shaft.
Out side the wtc the other end could be boned again.

I knew your nautilus was scratchbuilt. Too bad you don't want to take a rubber mould of that, I now a couple of guys on the AMS stand were chattering about that.

                            Don't you think there are

Don't you think there are getting too many Nautilus boats out there though? If you take a look over at the Disneysub site there are just an amazing number of kits and scratchbuilds on the go. Considering there is only ever one Nautilus really.

I don't mind so much loads of U-boats, nukes etc because it is natural to see lots of them. But I think the Nautilus is getting a little over done now. Where are all the Stingrays, Skydivers, Seaviews etc thats what I want to know? There's so many I'd like to do, if I had the time.

                              As a matter of fact,

As a matter of fact, my very first R/C submarine was a 1/48th scale Type VIIC. It is based on the DK Models hull kit.

This was also my first photo-etched deck project....both the main and conning tower decks.

Since the DK Models hull has all the correct detail except the rivets, I had a custom set of dry transfers made and applied them to create all those pesky rivets.

This is still one of my favorite boats...she sure does look good on the water!

                                I thought it was you

I thought it was you with the other 1/48th type VII Jeff.
Boy your etched brass deck would have been nice a couple years ago! I never want to drill out all those deck slots the hard way again.
I think we can get your etched deck sets now through Subtech-UK (I forget the name of the chap behind it - I met him at a model show this year and bought most of my operational bits, including the WTC and an APC unit.)

For the next hull I'm making the late war wooden deck version using real wooden planks which I've cut down on a little model table saw. It looks nice even before gluing on to the model. (I constructed it on a sheet of graph paper to keep everything square.)

I agree, your boat sure looks good. I just like this scale, sort of how big I'd want it if I were a kid . Not too monsterous getting in and out the water, and not too small either.

For the new year I will be signing up to Subcomm and will become a full member. Then I hope to have some fun sailing my subs next season.

                                Q) Did you use 380 motors geared down on you boat Jeff ?
