next problem - does anyone have any suggestions on how to wire the reversing circuit for my geared water pump utilising two microswitches? I am stumped, and I think that I actually need to use four. By reversing circuit I mean that the switches are actuated by a servo thus]

I agree with Ramius. An electronic speed controller with either a servo controlled valve or magnetic solenoid would be a better choice than micro switches.

The latter can be a source of trouble.

Electro-mechanical switches have a marked

Electro-mechanical switches have a marked tendency to fail, for all sorts of reasons, often when it's most inconvenient!

An electronic switch, although seemingly more complex, is much better alternative- trust me I'm speaking from experience.
