Video system wiring - what would happen if....

My knowledge of electronics is rather limited, so I'll post a somewhat silly question.

What would happen if I hooked up my 9V video camera system to my 12V battery?

Am I looking at a fizzle~pop situation, or is it just "not recommended"?

Reason being is that I'd rather stay away from a separate power source for my onboard camera system, and the sub runs off of 12VDC. Be nice if I could just hook up the camera to my battery.

If it would be 'bad', what options do I have for running the system off my main battery? Is there such a thing as a 9V BE/VR? I don't like the idea of having to crack my camera's WTC to swap batteries every time I want to use it.

    This falls

    Hi Bob]http://www.subcommittee.com/forum/icon_smile.gif[/img]
This falls into the "not recommended" catagory. The camera will have it's own internal voltage regulator for 5 volts for the I.C.'s, etc. Too high an input voltage can cause this device to overheat. To answer you question about a BE/VR, the answer is yes. Most BE/VR's use a 7806 type regulator. The numbering structure can be MC78x06xxxx. The 78 means it's a "positive" voltage regulator, that is the case can be grounded. An MC7809 is the same as a 7805 (5 volt), 7806 (6 volt), except it's for 9 volts! The only limit is the device should have a heat sink if the current is going to approach 1 amp. If the current is more than 1 amp, then an LM317 and a couple of parts will give 1.5 Amp. The camera should have the current requirements written on it which will most likely be in the ma range.

    Best, Ed
